goodbye paradise, hello hell...

so about 2 weeks ago i made a little trip home to midland/odessa, and accidentally became a homeowner...

my mother leads a very progressive welcoming church in midland. one of it's longtime members, was a really sweet old man named charles, who passed away some months ago. he willed the house to my mother, and my mother gave it to me, with the condition that if i take it, i not sell it or rent it out to someone.

so, it came down to struggle in paradise (austin) or never worry about money again in hell (midland)

so, i moved back.

the house is about friggin adorable. it was built in the 50s, and has all the 50s charm. i pulled up the carpeting, and am restoring the original hardwood floors. i am remodelling the bathroom, and texturing the walls in both of the bedrooms. it even has a little guesthouse in the back, and a huge yard, which i think so far is what i love most. i am kinda mildly obsessive-compulsive, and find myself spending an hour or so handwatering the grass everyday, sectioning it off in my mind, and doing each section one by one in order, then going back and hittting dry spots.

hope everyone is well... peace and love all around, and a ig hug from hell (midland)

which only has a population of 100,000,

ONLY 100,000 people!!!? That's a hell of a lot of people. I'm sure 1 or 2 of them have to be liberal. wink

100,000 is about medium sized i guess. i just miss 1.5 million austin, with it's incredibly liberal attitudes. but i did leave on a fun note. marleyfest and eeyore's birthday, both of which are dope smoking freedom of nudity events in austin... got to do both of those before i left, even got VIP tickets given to me for marleyfest, which meant free beer, food, and the ability to watch the concert from the wings. good times...

I'm sure they do that kind of stuff in Midland too, just without all the pot, nudity, beer, food, and music.

I don't mean to be a party pooper or anything, but will you really be saving that much money? To run a house is quite expensive. My parents own their own house but are probably spending more on it per month than I'm spending on my rented apartment... Just your two-hour shopping spree at Home Depot must have cost a bundle, right?

I'm also curious about how long your mothers "don't sell it or rent it out" condition will last? If you can never sell it, it's doesn't feel like as much of an investment.

On the other hand, it sure sounds like bliss to have your own home with a big yard, so don't take this the wrong way.
