There are literally thousands of them that crawl up the trees at my mothers place, that damn sound they make is like nails on a chalkboard to me

Only about every 17 years, or so. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Well is 'Brood X' this year here, so they say

So, where are they showing up?
I'm in Maryland and, as of this week, they're everywhere and getting worse. (If you're a big fan of them, at the Ritz-Carlton in DC, you can order the "sauteed cicadas on toast" appetizer - for about $15-20, for real.) *****************************************

Brood X is coming! Periodical cicadas will emerge this spring in many parts of the eastern U.S. (indicated by the areas shaded in blue). The last time this brood of cicadas emerged was 1987.

I like cicadas - they don't bite, and the sound they make reminds me of summer and helps me get to sleep in hot weather. I'm weird.

even i, Miss Animal Rights, am grossed out by Cicadas. we were driving through TN the last time they were out in full force, and i just about lost it. just going from the parking lot to a restaurant felt like a hundred little helicopters bumping into you from all directions... it was awful!
