I am thinking of buying an Ipod but need to know a few things...
What files do they support / not support?
Can I transfer files back to my PC if required?
How much music do they store?
What's with all the recent hoo-ha about the batteries wearing out? I seem to recall people claiming they were ripped off in the news.
Above all, are they great or a pile of crap???

I don't have one...I'm wary about getting one...something tells me it's the equivalent of buying a Commodore 64 and in a coupla years it'll be obsolete and replaced by something even better and cheaper. Maybe if I felt really burdened by CDs and my discman I'd make the plunge, but I don't. Heck, I have a MiniDisc that I use at the gym, and that seems to be enough for me. Maybe I just don't like nice things. I dunno.

I want one... does that help?

Hey, I'd like to know to. I was interested in getting a jukebox from Dell http://www1.us.dell.com/c...l=en&s=dhs , mostly because it's cheaper. $251 for 20 GB of storage.

Anyone out there have something OTHER than an iPod?

Don't buy an Ipod but the HP iPAQ instead....you get the whole computer plus the ability to play music with windows media player. I love my iPAQ

I'm not convincing anybody nor do I work for Apple but here's my story.

Since they came out I've been waiting for the technology to change or the price to come down (one in the same) and I constantly read reviews. Peeople bitched about the battery or how easy it is to scratch them and how the headphones don't fit into their little ear holes.

Then my best friend bought one and it was cool but I still wasn't on board. More reviews, more reading about the accessories.

Then I went somewhere for my job and this guy I was working with had the first ipod and said he bought it as soon as it was available. It was a little more square than my friends and seemed pretty cool except for his lame-ass taste in music.

I asked him about the battery and he said he never had a problem. Then he told me about a snowboarding adventure where he landed with all of his weight on it and it kept playing. (This guy is 6' 4" and 300 lbs.) So then when I give it back to him he hooks up the charger and throws it in the corner (with cement floors) and I freaked out thinking he just trashed it. "Dude, I told you I landed on it from a jump" was his response. So that made my mind up and the next day I dropped $400 on a 20 gig ipod.

While I've owned several shitty little mp3 players this is by far the best one I've ever owned (and paid for). The main thing that separated the ipod from the rest are the accesories that you can buy for it. The "itrip" broadcasts an fm signal so I listen to it in my car and at friends houses. There's an extra battery pack that takes 4 double aa's that gives you 15 hours of additional battery life for long trips.

The headphones suck so I spent anoth $25 for ones that fit into your ears but that's my only issue. I use it everyday and the software to use is itunes because it's really easy to deal with (even on my pc) and creating playlists are cool especially by moods.

If you have the ca$h and love music then I recommend it. With the mentioned accessories I've got about $625 into it, just FYI.

I adore mine, though I did replace the headphones just 'cause I don't like earbuds. I've got a 15 gig and it holds my entire (rather large) music library plus file backups. It's basically just an external hard drive with a good interface for playing music files.

Go to an Apple store if there is one near you and play with one, and they'll show you the different ones and go over your options. Apple stores are fuuuuun.
