So, where are they showing up?

I'm in Maryland and, as of this week, they're everywhere and getting worse.

(If you're a big fan of them, at the Ritz-Carlton in DC, you can order the "sauteed cicadas on toast" appetizer - for about $15-20, for real.)

Brood X is coming!
Periodical cicadas will emerge this spring in many parts of the eastern U.S. (indicated by the areas shaded in blue). The last time this brood of cicadas emerged was 1987.

Anxiety

I like cicadas - they don't bite, and the sound they make reminds me of summer and helps me get to sleep in hot weather. I'm weird.

Cicada Stir-Fry:
Ingredients


minced onion, coriander (cilantro), fresh gingerroot
sliced carrots, chopped cauliflower and/or broccoli
water chestnuts and/or other vegetables of your choice
bean sprouts and snow peas
blanched, teneral cicadas
In a wok or other suitable pan, heat a couple tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add ingredients in the order listed above when those in the most recent addition are partially cooked. Serve over whole-grain (“brown”) rice and add soy sauce to taste.

even i, Miss Animal Rights, am grossed out by Cicadas. we were driving through TN the last time they were out in full force, and i just about lost it. just going from the parking lot to a restaurant felt like a hundred little helicopters bumping into you from all directions... shake it was awful!
