The few jobs I've worked at in Retail and Restaurants, generally when someone was being a real asshole, before they could even request to see a manager, I would offer to get one for them.

They get paid to put up with this shit, not me. And it would often freak out the customer a bit, a few times they told me not to bother getting a manager and they calmed down.

A few minutes later, the phone rang, and the same woman was asking 4 the address of our head office. I just KNEW it was her, it wasn't that hard 2 figure out. I put her on hold, and S-L-O-W-L-Y made my way upstairs, found the number, had a piss, checked 2 see if there were any messages on my cellphone, and S-L-O-W-L-Y made my way back downstairs 2 the phone, where I gave her the number she so desperately needed.

clapping brilliant!! especially the "had a piss" part! lol

having been a waitress before, i try to always be extremely nice to service folks. reminding yourself that your schedule is not nearly as important as you'd like to think helps a lot! lol

but i have to admit, one of my favorite lines in customer service must be when a friend of mine went to WalMart and asked a woman at the service desk where she might be able to find a particular item. the customer service person responded (with some righteous indignation): "i WORK here, i don't SHOP here!" lol

if i may be so bold edit

I found dat da customers i served working in a department store are quite different to serving those at a boutique chain. People who shop at department stores can be at times scary. The ones in da latter are bratty n think they're all princesses because they earn high wage. Da most annoying customers are the ones who come when i'm about to leave and keep me in for an extra time...hate it, don't like it, cant' stand it!
ONe thing i hate is some people who have no manners..it's a cultural thing, but very frustrating at times... they call out to you like you're in da meat market or something. I'll be serving one customer...and then they'd be like "I WANT RALPH LAUREN! GIVE ME RALPH LAUREN! GIVE ME SMELL!" SO i'm like, 'i am serving a customer thankyou, i'll be with you in a MOMENT!' hrmph. ONe obnoxious man snapped his fingers at me too hmph!

But it's been a while since i've had a really bad customer. Some can be fun to serve! Really! AS misunderstanding some customers can be toward retail staff, there are some who are really grouse. I once had to work a shift from 4-10 alone with no break...and this lovely gal who i served offer me a some chips she had...then she just gave me da whole pack! I was stoked! PLUS she gave me her Marie Clare magazine to read!!! I couldn't believe da generosity!!

Anxiety

one time when i was a waiter someone ordered coleslaw and we didn't have coleslaw on the menu and they were like, "i don't care, i want coleslaw - how hard can it be for you to make me some coleslaw?"

and so i said "well, i can chew up some lettuce and carrots and spit it into a bowl for you, that's about as close as you'll get here."

surprisingly i didn't get in trouble for that. not suprisingly, my tip was less than stellar.

i've actually had the opposite experience. i was working at a hospital in a poorer community and the people, the pets, and the vet sucked major ass. everyone had an attitude and every animal was pissed off. i work in a richer community now and people actualy have manners and, for the most part, their animals are trained. when i move, i will be working in a high class neighborhood again and, from my walk through day, the people and animals seem nicer. shrug

although a working class neighborhood is different from the 'hood where everyone has pitsbulls that they train as fighting dogs. at least that's how it was where i worked.
