charlottegelin	You sure this wasn't from Australia? Looks like a huntsman spider, pretty harmless if it is, and not really as big as it looks (probably not a huge clock!). They love to sit behind picture frames and most commonly sit behind the sun visor in your car, so when you flip it down it falls in your lap. One had babies in our bathroom and there were hundreds of them, so cute!
