July

I flew out of Minneapols to Seattle before and there were a few afternoon thunderstorms. It was just a slight bit more of a rough ride. The plane moved around alot. "turbulence" Until it was over Montana and the sky was bright blue all the way into Seattle/Tacoma. Don't worry about it. They usually fly around them. jet

Dude, you just totally ruined my life. I've always comforted myself with the road death argument, I never thought about the ride ratio issue. disbelief lol

I find lightning to be pretty damn scary while flying, but I have to say, I think turbulence is super fun. nod

Well, there are some problems with their logic, well, aside from the fact that it scares me shitless. I have read that flying is still safer than driving. Even if one were to ride a plane as frequently as get into a car, they would still be 22 times as likely to die in a car. That's not much, but I'll take it!

Per million passanger miles, flying is definitely safer as well.

I'm sure there are other holes in their logic as well. Maybe some kind .Orgers will examine this issue. And make me feel better. I don't like people shitting in my coffee!

It's true!! It's true I tells ya! bawl

I was gonna come clean before your journey, but i've been busted. biggrin Just stirring the shit a wee bit.

Chew on something to stop your ears going pop.

And use the toilets as much as possible early on. They can get pretty grim later - especially when turbulence kicks in. feeling ill

Those toilets always scare me. If something freaky were to go wrong, the last place I wanna be is sitting on the can, "pinching a squanto," know what I mean? wink

I flew from Houston to Minneapolis one time during a storm. The lightning illuminated the dark view every now and then where I could see a man... no, maybe some kind of creature... on the wing of the plane, trying to tear off one of the engines as it looked right in my direction and....

Well, at least the first sentence was true. lol Ran into a little turbulence from the storm, but smooth flying after that.

take heart! once you get above the storm clouds it'll be clear and sunny, smooth sailing all the way. san francisco rarely gets thunderstorms (i don't remember many while i was living there) so your landing will be smooth. and during the flight, once you're above the storm, you'll look down on the gray green clouds churning angrily below and smile serenely, enjoying your freedom from such strife.

or, you could drink yourself into a stupor during pre-boarding and never even notice any turbulence, should there be any wink

Flying is cool. I hate sitting in cars or going on boats, but planes i have no problem with. Anyway, last time i flew was from NY City to Belgium, and from the get go they promised us some heavy weather. Flew through the night, no turbulence or nothing, flying over Ireland, they served breakfast, only 1.5hours of flight to go, thought nothing was going to happen, but then, right over Belgium was this pretty bad storm, and there was no way around it since we had to land. I can tell you it was pretty xciting seeing and hearing the lightning strike around you, electricity in the airplane fade, dark clouds and heavy rain outside. The people vomiting around u is a bit of a bummer, but if you concentrate on the spectacle outside you'll be fine.

Oh, and i regularly hear that flying over the hymalayas (sp?) is the worst. Not because of the storms but because of the big drops planes make there. It's probably an urban legend but i heard some stories of people dying because they hit the plane's ceiling with their head.

Has anyone flown during a storm before?

Not that I can recall. But I spent an hour on the runway in Detroit last Sunday evening due to nearby storms. The pilot said he'd take off only if he thought it was safe to do so, and so we had to wait until he had enough information to make a decision. (We did eventually take off and arrive safely in Indianapolis.)

I suspect that taking off and landing during a storm is more problematic than cruising.

thumbs up! I'd rather spend seven hours (including layover) flying to Seattle than four days driving there.

And Northwest Airlines just gave me Silver Elite status! woot!

omg thats the most exciting part! big grin

I can remember I was flying and the weather was soo shit, the turbulence terrible, the plane kept dipping in the sky, all the air hostesses were lying on the floor in the aisle cos they couldnt get back to their seats quick enough and were hanging onto the trolleys, everyone screaming, and I had a little buzz of fear and excitement inside me.... boxed

your more likely to be killed in a road traffic accident than in an airplane....hope that put your fears in2 perspective wink

spare us that tired argument...
if you compare the number of drivers with the number of plane passengers, it is not safer to fly.
besides, if a plane has an accident you're most likely gonna die which - as we know - is not nescessarily the case in a car accident.
