First, there is Prince. Chronologically from latest to oldest. Album, followed by singles, followed by boots. (Not that I have any bootlegs, but if I did, that's where I'd put them.)

Then, Madonna. Same order as Prince, except I really, really definitely have no Madonna boots. What would be the point of that?

Then A - Z all artists/groups/genres.

Then compilation CDs alpha by CD title.

Then soundtracks alpha by title.

Then Christmas discs alpha by artist.

It makes no difference how I organise mine. I have two young children!

B4 motherhood, mine used to be color coded. (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, etc.)

Oh gawd. I got the bright idea to put all of my cds in binders (organized alphabetically by artist) and store the cases. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

Now I'm facing the task of matching all of the cds back up with the cases and figuring out how to store them.

I still plan to store them alphabetically, by artist, with the stuff from each artist arranged chronologically.

But why are all cd shelves so fucking ugly? Has anybody come up with a decent-looking way to store them that doesn't cost too much?

I tend to organise mine into styles firstly, then into artists. Makes it easier for me to choose a sound to suit my mood.
I do have a pile on top of current favorites, and of course the Prince selection. biggrin

i know what you mean. I moved into books when I moved to L.A. -- they're still in books, and I HATE it. I gotta get back into the cases. And yes, all the shelves are soooo fucking ugly, or really really expensive.

Aurgh! I like a kind of modern aesthetic, and people who design for that can't trouble themselves with messy, fussy little details like cd storage. confused

Prince CDs are stored chronologically, then I store the rest, by genre, alphabetically: jazz, nu-jazz/ambient, "neo-soul" (R&B records less than 15 years old), "old school" (R&B/soul records more than 15 years old, pop/rock, hip-hop, soundtracks/comedy records, and Christmas music.

I happen to have a nice cd tower that I bought at BJ's for $20. Everything is organzined alphabetically. I'm so picky about it. I even fretted over where to put the "Symbol' album
If it doesn't fit, it's ugly anyway.

Alphabetically, definatley. But when you got a few from one particular artist they have to be arranged chronologically within the alphabetic system... confuse this is how all my cds, vinyls, videos and dvds are organised and it took me ages lol

Artists Alpabetically, with their respective albums chronilogically.
Compilations and soundtracks filed alphabetically after the Artist A-Z.
It's the only logical way of doing it when you've got a lot of CDs/LPs.

I try to group CD's into my favourites and with other albums by the same person, I prefer it that way
JaneyPoos used to be it... then they changed what it was. Now what I am isn't it and what is it is strange and frightening to me...
