Your Cd Collection Organizational Skillz

i just unpacked all my cds and started to organize them in my new room. i started obviously with Purple Pants: official albums, official singles and then boots. and then all the other artists, i started with the ones i have all the back albums to and then all the others down the shelf. alphabetically is too much work. i prefer artists that are more important to me so i have quicker access to them.

how do you organize your cd collection?

lol Alphabetically, only because it helps me to locate the CD I want to listen to quicker.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

On toppa my CD Player I got 1 pile of CD's for Prince and next to it I got 1 pile of CD's for non-Prince. I change CD's around so much I dont bother puttinem back in their cases.
As for the cases, theyre dumped in a splodge on the floor.

QuestionOfUToo

As John Cusak said in High Fidelity, "Autobiographically".

This is different from Chronologically because this is in the actual order in which these discs were purchased. When I purchase a new disc, it goes on the top of the pile. When want to take one, I have to remember when and where I was when I purchased that CD. Often, a lot more memories come along with those thoughts. It's usually a good thing.

Alphabetically, then chronogically if I have more than 1 by the same artist.

i couldn't do it autobiographically, man. i'd end up buggin--"this came out in '77...but this over here came out in '82. i know i bought this before i bought that, but fuck it! this goes in the 1977 stash...and that in the 1982 stash!"

They're all just sort of thrown in a drawer, except for my Prince cd's, which have their own place and are neatly organized next to one another, but in no particular order. How Shawn let this go, I will never know. He has a huge collection of cd's... and it is veryorganized... alphabetically by group, then in chronological order per group.

Prince CDs chronologically, general population CDs by genre and alphabetically, then chronologically if more than 1 by the same artist, mix CDs alphabetically by title, soundtracks alphabetical by movie.

Now if you want to get an eyeroll out of my friends ask how my movies are arranged lol

I must have about two thousand CDs and they're arranged by genre.

anyone ever tried sorting it by the color of the backside? the shelve looks really cute that way, believe me... before u think I'm completely nuts, I just tried this for fun when years ago after moving all my records were completely mixed up anyway, and I said what the fuck, let's try somthin' new! nod

seriosly though, I tried to split by genre years ago, but it's too hard to categorise some records, so I stopped that.

Nowadays with around 4000 CDs/records it's mainly coming down to the alphabetically/chronological thing again, Soundtracks and compilations extra.
I DO break this rule occasionally in order to keep together what belongs together, f.e. Prince & related artists, most P-Funk simply files unter Clinton, Commodores & Lionel go together, Zapp & Roger, George Michael & Wham, Beatles & solo works... U get the idea smile

I just noticed I'm not the only one:

alphabetically and then chronolgically

it's the only way I can remember what CDs are missing/loaned out/etc

this came in very helpful when my apartment was broken into and over 500 CDs were stolen, I was able to just go down the alphabet to make my list of lost items...

Jesus. I couldn't sit down and try to categorize the cases because there's thousands. I've got them in boxes in the closet and in those plastic towers everywhere. They're all empty- I keep my CDs in sutcases so I can have them all with me when I go anywhere.

Because of that, they're insured. In the suitcases they're somewhat in order. I have a case just for Prince alone. geek

Alphabetically by artists, then chronological. My soundtracks have a seperate section, however, and are listed alphabetical.

It makes no difference - none of my CDs are in the right boxes! It's a real memory test locating a CD I want to listen to: "Now, I listened to that after Song To A Seagull, so that's why STaS is in it's box. After that I listened to... damn it... yes, got it - Now & Again - so it's in that box. Yay! Now where did I put that...??"
