Financial Question

Why is it that when you use a debit card, you'd have to press "credit" instead of "debit". I mean, it's not really a credit card. Just signed up for one today and was just wondering. Read the rules and regulations book and it doesn't say why. I don't want any problems from this bank, as they already have a lot of fees for a lot of things.

It's credit until you pay the bank back.

Thanks guys. I'm quick with lots of things, but I'm afraid that when it comes to finances, I'm not all that bright. Found that out the hard way, so for a long time I was basically doing the shoebox thing and only had an account for cashing checks.

Wait, it depends. If your card has a Visa logo you probably have to select credit. It has to do with which network will authorize the transaction. In Minnesota, there are no true debit cards (that I know of), only "check cards" with a Visa logo that are run through Visa international. I lived in Wisconsin one summer and actually had a bank debit card that could only be used at local participating retailers.

Ok, the card they'll be sending to me will have a MasterCard logo on it. The booklet says I can use it at an ATM or any POS (Point of Sale) place. Haven't gotten the acutal card yet , so I don't know if I'll have to use a pin number or not.

You'll have to use your pin if it's done as a POS (debit) but if it's used as a credit card there should be no need to enter a pin, just a signature is required.
