It sounds like a fucking great city...my wife (then girlfriend) went there a few years ago, and fell in love with it...

You can't help it. The food, the people, the music, the weather, the geography. It's all so perfect. So much to do and never enough time to do it.

Too right! thumbs up!

Might be a good idea to pick up one of the free papers when you get here (The Guardian or SF Weekly) for some ideas on dining & any events that might be happening when you're in town, they seem to list some helpful stuff re: music/dining/nightlife (I don't go out so don't blame me if it leads you somewhere terrible, LOL!). mr.green

Also I've never had problems in the Mission - you could spit & hit a great restaurant in that neighborhood (tappas, sangria - YUM!). Just be cool & don't look like a fucking tourist lol Bring a jacket (gets chilly most nights) & if you want good Thai food try Manoras on 12th & Folsom (I think) - delicious menu & the drinks are good too... smile
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Well that goes without saying! There is some amazing food in the Castro. Try Nirvana on Castro. Excellent food.

I'm chiming in a bit late, but INSATIABLE offers a great run-down, Sausage. You're gonna love San Fran! If I were completely free to do so, I'd up and move there tomorrow!

Two of my favorite areas of the City are the Haight (a wonderful blast from the '60s) and the Castro (GREAT for people watching and one-of-a-kind cloth and furniture shopping!! It also has some wonderful local theaters, piercing parlors, etc). For a respite from all the typical touristy BS, you also want to give some time to just cruising around some of Frisco's more wealthy residential areas, too. The city's colorful row houses and painted lady homes are absolutely something you have to see! And for a slight change of pace, I'd agree that you should hit Berkeley. The liberal college town vibe is still very much in effect, and you'll find a nice hodge-podge of old-school music stores, multicultural boutiques, eclectic cafes and vibrant live music and poetry.

And even though the redwoods are WAY up north on Highway 1, I'd urge you to still take that coastal drive! While the redwoods are the icing on the cake, the whole way up, you'll be treated to some wonderful coastal views, lush spring foliage, scores of wineries, literally fiields and fields of grapes and -- if you synchronize your return to just after dusk -- an absolutely postcard-worthy skyline view of the City.

Warning: If you and the new Mrs. don't want kids nine months after, definitely go to San Francisco "prepared" -- it's one of the most romantic and inspiring places you'll ever travel in North America. wink

Wow...thanks! So, I should really avoid The Tenderloin?

(Sounds like I'm discussing some really lame Batman villain!)

I'd be careful in the Mission District.. Leave the jewelry at home. (And you can find some excellent Mexican food restaurants here)

I lived in between the Mission District and the Tenderloin, I didn't have problems. But times have changed.

The Mission is where all the cool clubs and lounges are. My sister lives in the Mission right now (right in the heart of it where they have shootings on their corner every week lol ) but other than that, I love the Mission.

I used to live in SF back in 89-92. I go back about 2-3 times a year now. I would love to live there again. love

Oh, and you will absolutely LOSE YOUR MIND at the amount of restaurants there are. drool

Oh and one more thing, the redwoods aren't forever away. You can go to Muir Woods which is just north of the Golden Gate Bridge by about 12 miles. They have some really enormous redwoods there as well, although maybe not as tall the the ones farther north, but still amazing.

lol Back again.....

and if you go to Muir Woods, on your way stop at Mount Tamalpais National Park which is on the way. It's just north of the Golden Gate Bridge and you can drive up the winding roads, park, and just wander through all the beautiful rolling green hills. It's so surreal, and you can see the entire city from way up there.

Look in the Sunday editions of the SF Chronicle in the weeks leading up to your trip (SFGATE.COM) to get a feel for what's will be happening while you are there. Try a show at the historic Fillmore if there is an act you both like.

If the weather is clear and warm (like it has been the last couple of weeks) try going to Ocean Beach (at the end of Geary Street, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, hike the Marin Headlands immediately north of the Bridge, or visit SFs nude beach, Baker Beach (south of the Bridge). If it's foggy, (much more likely), the more you go inland, the warmer the weather.

If you have a car, Muir Woods has Redwoods and it's less than 2 hours north of SF. In that area you can hike to Mt Tamalpais (as someone earlier pointed out), go to Point Reyes (visit the lighthouse if you have time, walk along Stinson Beach (wear warm clothes) and visit one the of town's roadside eaterys.

More northeast is the Wine Country (about an hour and a half by car) of Napa or less crowded and just as good IMO, the wineries along the Russian River in the Sonoma Valley (and most of these wineries don't charge a tasting fee).

South along the coast are Half Moon Bay (1/2 hour), Santa Cruz with its historic boardwalk (and hour and a half), and the Monterey Bay Area (approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on which highway you take) possibly the most scenic place on earth. In Monterey and neighboring Carmel, you have shopping, eating, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and great restaurants.

And that's not even counting museums, tourist traps, sports events, or Golden Gate Park (SF's Central Park).

There is too much too explore in a week.

Enjoy

Okay, so now I've gone too far! Back to San Fran....

No Hitchcock fans here? Nobody to tell me what museum was featured in that movie? I could look online myself, but it's just more fun if someone else tells me... razz

Now, is it called the End Up because everyone ends up there, or becasue it's some kind of innuendo about being a gay bar. I've heard it both ways.

well, people always seem to end up there after partying all night...it opens on sunday morning at 6am and people always look like this: shocked or eek

hehehehe.....it has a gay theme on fridays called "fag fridays"..but most of the time it is the best mixture of life...gay, straight, black and white...a wonderful place to hang out..

damn, now i need to shake my booty!
