My Life is Like a Train Wreck Waiting to Happen... Almost a year after getting laid off from my other job because three of my bosses left the company and my job got eliminated, the company that I am now working at just had a meeting last Friday, and the news is not good.
It seems that our parent company almost shut our company down recently due to poor sales and the fact that the company has been losing money for the last four years. Thank goodness that they shut down another company that they owned in Florida, but who's to say that it won't happen to us eventually? My boss came to me after the meeting and asked what I thought of it, and I told him, "Well, I'm glad you were honest with us anyway instead of sugar-coating the truth." He then told me that we should be alright, but I heard that line at my last job ("there will be no layoffs, I have confidence that we will come back strong, blah, blah, blah"), and then a few months later, I was out of a job. So it looks like it's back to looking for another job while I'm still employed at this one. I was looking for another job anyway, since this job pays shit wages ($6,000 less than my last job). I only hope that I can find something kind of fast in this fucked-up economy, due to the fact that the jobs are still not plentiful in this area, and the ones that they do have don't pay much. Another added difficulty that I foresee is that even though I have 20+ years experience doing Administrative Assistant work, a lot of these companies now want someone with a degree. Now this to me is totally fucked up, because in my opinion, I can do my job just as good as some fresh faced youngster who went to college and studied to do the same things that I can do with my eyes closed and one hand tied behind my back. To me, you don't need a degree to be an Administrative Assistant, but a lot of companies, unfortunately, don't have the same feeling. Wish me luck, I sure as hell am going to need it. I hope I can find a decent job soon, so that I don't get laid off once again (I don't think I could take it). If worse comes to worse, I will flat-out quit this job before I face another layoff. While this sounds kind of drastic, I was only recently hired as a full time employee (after temping about 5-6 months) last November. I'm kind of the low man on the totem pole, and I get the feeling that if they're going to start cutting jobs, I will be the first to go. While I wouldn't have money coming in, it would give me a lot more time to interview for a new job. my life is a train wreck edit RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Why not think about a change in career?
Could you afford to temp? My job is looking a bit ropey too.

Well, in order for me to change my career, I would have to go back to school, which I can't really afford right now.
I did temp at this job before it became permanent. Trouble is, there doesn't seem to be many temp jobs available either. Good luck to you with your job, I hope you don't face a layoff. Everytime I've had to leave a job that I loved, in retrospect I've realised I was just contented rather than happy. Comfortable rather than fulfilled. Although I hope that I'm not laid off because of the hassle with bills, losing touch with colleagues and stuff like that, I'm sure something good will come out of it.
