fcc/clear channel/radio

I guess until the Howard Stern incident, I never really fully grasped the dire situation we have in this country regarding the music industry and mass media outlets. I cannot understand how a company like Clear Channel got as big as they are without violating any anti-trust laws. Here are some common stats regarding them that if you don't already know about, you should really think about, I am taking most of this info off this website:http://www.bnfp.org/neighborhood/Carosso030508.htm , however I have seen similar information all over the place, this is just one nice spot to quote from, props to them.

They own approx: 1200 radio stations.
37 television stations as well

Clear Channel Entertainment aka SFX, a company owned and operated by Clear Channel owns and operates 200 concert venues nationwide.
They essentially either own, operate, or exclusively book the major venues
Of the radio markets, they control 60% of all rock programming.

They completely own the rights to tours of major rock stars such as Janet Jackson, Pearl Jam, and others.

When you put it all in one piece, it is really quite sobering. I realize now that as a young person, I really had no choice as to what I was listening to or watching on the video stations. I can see now that the radio stations can not risk playing something they wanted. They are left to play what the boss wants, Clear Channel. It puts a whole new meaning to main stream. How are these songs picked?? Well first off, there are approximately 1000 singles released ever week, ( I heard this somewhere, I may be off, whatever the number is, its a lot.), of these, only 4 on average make it into the rotation. I used to think it was because most of the music was just simply not good enough or the right music for the station. But as I think about this more, I realize no, its not being played, because Clear Channel doesn't want it. They only want to play what they promote, and I can't really blame them, its a business to them. I admit I am in the infancy stages of research, and I can be way off on the specific figures, but the basic principles are there. This is really a sad state of affairs, and I will leave you with this bit of hypocrisy, the chairman of the FCC was also a Federal offical on anti trust law.??? Can anyone confirm this??? If this is true, I am at a loss for words. Wow, thanks for allowing me to vent!

Peace!!!!!

It is sad. I don't listen to the radio, although I do watch TV. Not matter how you try, you can't really get away from Clear Channel. They pretty much run everything which to me is just scary. It's like one huge brainwashing of the nation. disbelief

Clear Channel will play it IF the record company behind the recording pays them what they want to play it. It's really old news, but they do just about have a monopoly.

Colin Powell's son is the big cheese of the FCC.

And although Stern is worthless trash, he's not going any damn where. He makes too much money for too many people in high places. This is the biggest advertisement for his show since his movie was released years ago.
