Gaines, Presented by The Justice Theater Project in cooperation with the St. Francis of Assisi Arts for Justice Ministry Friday, March 19, 2004 8 p.m. At St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 11401 Leesville Road, Raleigh, 919-847-8205 Admission is free; donations are greatly appreciated. On Friday, March 19, 2004, the Justice Theater Project in cooperation with the Arts for Justice Ministry at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh will present Romulus Linney's play, "A Lesson Before Dying." Based on the novel by Ernest J. Gaines, the play is about an innocent black man sentenced to death; his godmother who demands that he be educated in prison so as to die with dignity; and a reluctant teacher who learns as much as his condemned student despite his own cynical and scornful view of the world. "A Lesson Before Dying" is a play about people who insist on declaring the value of their lives even when their lives seemingly count for nothing. It is a story about the imprisoned finding freedom even at the moment of death, and human beings longing for dignity and respect in a world that often denies these things. Living in a death penalty state with a sentencing rate that is four times that of Virginia and nearly twice the rate of Texas, "A Lesson Before Dying" offers North Carolinians an opportunity to reassess their own personal opinions on the state's death penalty system prior to the May 18th Moratorium Now! Lobby Day at the North Carolina General Assembly. The production also will include a unique interactive "Talk-Back" forum that invites and encourages audience participation and involvement. "A Lesson Before Dying" is presented one night only on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church (919-847-8205), 11401 Leesville Road, in Raleigh. Admission is free and donations are gratefully accepted. For more information or directions to St. Francis of Assisi, please call 919-870-8715. ... hopefully some of y'all will be able to show up and either show your opposition to the death penalty or your appreciation of one of my favorite damn books...
