Best Documentaries u've ever seen

American Movie (orgers, if you haven’t seen this – RENT IT! Hilarious!)
Stevie
Hoop Dreams
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
Roger & Me (before Michael Moore married himself)
Truth Or Dare (image-saving editing or no, this was a good movie)
Capturing The Freidmans (I’ve only seen part of it, can’t wait to see it all)

I’m really looking forward to watching what others suggest!

The Maysles Brothers' Grey Gardens is, in my opinion, the best documentary ever.

John's Not Mad - a BBC documentary about a 16 year old Scottish boy who has Tourette's Syndrome.

"Mum you're a slut!"
"Fuck Off!" - shouted at the top of his voice in a public library.
"You stupid cunt!" - said to his teacher who dropped some soil from a potted plant.

The Panama Deception -- about the US invasion of Panama to capture Noriega, and the senseless, unreported slaughter of innocent Panamanians. It was shocking to learn the United States also is in the mass-grave business.

I only wish I could remember the name of this documentary, perhaps someone knows the name.

It was about these transient transvestits/transexuals and one of them becomes converted to Christianity and marries a woman and lives a straight lifestyle. He cut off his ties with his former friends because they were living sinful lives. By the end of the story the man is dying and he realizes that he allowed his guilt to dictate his life and that admits that he regretted ever leaving the life he had to live the life he knew wasn't right for him. It was very compelling and very sad.

You aren't thinking about Southern Comfort, are you? That was a really amazing documentary. I bawled all the way through it.

That doesn't sound right. I'll have to ask my friend. It was absolutely heartbreaking.

I'm trying to remember the name of a documentary I saw at a Women's Film Festival--it was really informative and emotionally wrenching. It was about abortion before it was legal in this country, and they interviewed women who'd had illegal abortions, men and women whose mothers/sisters/wives/girlfriends died of illegal abortions, doctors, policemen, etc.

Another awesome documentary, and I wish I could remember the name of it, was one I saw a few years back where a woman would walk down a busy city street and when some asshole construction worker would catcall her, she'd whip out a camcorder from under her jacket and start interviewing them about why they felt it was necessary to harass her. It was pretty powerful, not to mention it was fucking hilarious watching those lunkheads squirm.

Hmmm, that might "Killing Us Softly", by Jean Kilbourne. I think she's the one who did that, she did a series showing how the media encourages violence against women.

OMG! I forgot all about that. For some reason, they made us watch that show in our Life Studies class at school. I mean - can you imagine a load of 14 year olds being made to watch that shit? It was like manna from Heaven. In fact, I'm beginning to think that my school was a little odd, whenever I think back.

I've been seeing this ad on the subway and meaning to investigate. I have no clue what it's about. The ad doesn't give much away.

This film is about a father-son who were convicted of sexually abusing young boys that they taught computer classes to in the basement of their home. The father is dead, but the son is still in prison. The guy who made the film points out a few things about the evidence/trial that questions whether or not they were guilty, though, but also shows the confessions and evidence of what they did.

A few of the victims of the Freidmans took out a full page ad before the Oscars, directed at the Oscar committee, to protest awarding the film an Oscar. They're angry at the way it was all presented, and that the younger Freidman is using the film to file for an appeal.

Capturing the Friedmans was deep. I saw it at the movies and it messed me up for days...I recently rented the DVD and got to watch the extra material, and now I'm just convinced that however dysfunctional my family may be, it can always be more of a nightmare...

Crumb (he's crazy!)
Paris is Burning (vogue!)
Party Monster (amazingly interesting)
Bowling for Columbine (no comment needed)

And that's all I can think of...
