Lost In Translation: Lost On Me

DON'T GET ME WRONG:

I thought it was a cute little movie. Very sleek and post-modern without being too quirky or pretentious. Very interesting, clever story. Nice to look at. Nothing wrong with the acting.

BUT:

I don't get why people are so crazy about this film! Bill Murray was good, sure, but he wasn't Oscar good. I thought he was much better in Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, and even in Cradle Will Rock. Scarlett Johannsen was adorable, but she always is. The cinematography and "feel" of the movie was pretty outstanding, I'll give it that. It was gorgeous to look at. But when the end credits rolled, I just felt like, "well, that's what THAT was all about." Wasn't moved. Wasn't blown away. Wasn't really feeling much of anything except, "well, that was okay."

So why are so many folks so into this movie? Maybe I'm missing something. I really wanted to go crazy for this movie - I'm in favor of Sofia Coppola as a director, and I love that Bill Murray has been making so many quirky/artsy movies in the past few years. But yeah...it's kinda "eh" to me.

Thoughts?

i hear ya ...

i rented it the other night .... was psyched about watching it ....

walked to the video counter ... and as i was handing my money to the gal - she said "oh this movie .... everyone who brings it back is saying how baddd this movie is ... "

great hype ....
so i took it home and looked at the dvd box for 3 nights .... after it was overdue i sat down to watch it !

i feel like i could write the same review .... cute movie ... but ... very quirky and not really oscar worthy ... in my opinion ...

i relate alot to this film because i travel for work and it is very much like that, which ever city you are in. these are the kind of experiences that you have when you travel for work.

when i saw it i was amazed someone actually wrote about these things that you experience and fleetingly it's gone.

loved it.

The movie is deliberately low key and geared toward an older audience, one of most measured romantic comedy to come around in a long time. It might not appeal to you at this point in your journey... or ever, and that's perfectly normal. I don't get off on some movies even though I know they are great in purely artistic terms.

I don't get why people get crazy about:

The Shawshank Redemption
Casablanca
Resevoir Dogs

All very, very boring films.

well, I loved the film, thought the performances were fantastic and I was sincerely moved at least on two occasions during the film...one of them being the last scene, that got me all teary

I can understand, though, that many people donĀ“t like it

oh, and Bill Murray sooo deserves the Oscar. He gives a wonderful performance!

It hit the video stores a coupla weeks ago. I'd certainly recommend renting it - I didn't dislike it by any means - just trying to figure out the big whoop over it.

because, for some strange reason, when the press and industry decide something IS trendy and cool and great...they make it that. it seems like every critic was mad about this film and every actor thought it was profound. i personally thought it was about an hour too long. it would have made a much better short. some clever scenes and poignant moments but far too much of it was cliched and pointless. not to mention repetitive and redundant. i'm probably just missing something about the film but, nonetheless, it didn't move me at all.

The big whoop is that there's finally an american romantic comedy that feels this real and true. Hollywood romantic comedies tend to have a lot of cute moments abd make you feel like you are eating a whole box of chocolate. They try so hard to be sweetly funny, generally by opposing two mismatched people that end up being perfect for each other. The strings are almost always too visible, especially the one going for your heart. As moviegoer, I hate to feel too manipulated by overcute attempts to win my heart or make me laugh. Lost in translation achieves a kind of zen like balance that is very rare -- this is the kind of movie the French used to do so well. I don't think anyone has pulled it off in a long time. Francis Ford must be awfully proud and maybe a little jealous.

One thing I liked about this movie...AND "The Virgin Suicides"...is that it felt like I was watching a foreign movie, even though it wasn't. What I mean by that is that there was a level of sophistication that you don't get in a lot of mainstream American film. I can appreciate that. A lot, actually. On that level, I did really like the film.

The Virgin Suicides is one of my favorite movies (one of the only movies, in my opinion, to do some justice to a novel), so I was looking forward to seeing Lost in Translation for a while. I finally got around to renteg it and watched it last night, and I was disappointed. I found it to be boring. The acting was great, and it was really nice to look at, but I wanted it to end about 40 minutes into the movie.

Film is such a personal thing.

I had read all the great reviews of 'lost in translation'. Went into, though, with kinda low expectations as i felt i'd be too young to appreciate it. I'm only 22.

What can i say- I was blown away.
Everything about this movie is beautiful. The script, cinemotography, acting, everything...

There were a couple of moments in particular that really got to me.

The film explores loneliness and disillusionment without ever resorting to sentimentality.

It reminded me alittle of 'about schmidt'.

"YEAH!!!"

I liked it a lot and it's def. one of the better movies i watched this year. However, i went into the theater without having much expectations, unaware of the hype and even somewhat sceptical of the Copolla jr.'s capabilities (i appreciated the Virgin Suicides, but i didn't move me, and i figuered she could only go off the wrong end). But i'm glad to say i was wrong, it was a great movie, certainly not too long, some people disbelief
However, i do agree it's not deserving of a 'best movie' oscar. But then i don't think any of the nominated movies really is. So i wouldn't mind if it won anyway.
