No mo' trips to Uptown for me for a while...

the city bus drivers here in mpls are gonna go on strike startin thursday. lucky for me that:

a) i live only blocks away from my job, so i walk to/from work everyday--but most of the people at my job ain't so lucky tho', they live out in the suburbs so they usually take the bus to/from work and now they have to find alternative means to get to work. sad

b) i live downtown, so i live close to a lotta places...except for a full-service grocery store. the one that's closest to me is about 20 minutes or so away (probably more eek) by foot. there's like this little store that's right by my house but it's more like a convenience store than anything. mad

i don't have a car (i refuse to drive, cuz some folks honestly dunno how to fuckin drive up here)...cab fare's super-expensive...i guess i'm stranded here in downtown mpls till the strike's over.

bawl uptown, i'll miss yooooou!!! bawl

Ugh, I remember when there was a transit strike scare when I was living in New York...I lived in Brooklyn and had to get to work in Manhattan, and I was *SCREWED*.

Fortunately at the very last possible minute, an agreement was apparently ironed out. Hopefully the same will happen for you all in MPLS, though I don't know how mass-transit-reliant a city it is out there (and thusly, how much muscle the bus drivers have out there). neutral

When was the "scare?" I'm from Bklyn. I remember an actual strike (late 70s/early 80s). My highschool was in my neighborhood so I really wasn't all that affected.

On the bright side dansa, you'll get lots of exercise AND save a few bucks. thumbs up!

It was in the late summer of '99, if I'm not mistaken. I just remember Ed Koch on NY1 all night, using the opportunity to badmouth the mayor left and right. Ol' Ed was having himself a good time... lol

Do you have a driver's license? If so, do you have a car-sharing program in Minneapolis like Flexcar? It seems like an excellent option for people who can generally get by just fine without a car, but would occasionally benefit from the use of one.

(Alas, I live in Indianapolis, where owning a car is pretty much essential. I think people here would drive to the bathroom if they could.)

How about riding a bike? or skate boarding it??

I know what it is like to go through a bus strike. Dayum I had to car pool with some office mates, lucky for me the driver lived a couple blocks away - and the strike is always in winter time, ever notice?

yeah i've got a license...as for a car-sharing program, i dunno if there's one like that up here. i think i'll be able to survive without mass transit...at least for now. it's more of a...disappointment than an "omg, no buses! i'll die!!!!!"-type affair. biggrin

Hey... some grocery stores actually still do home delivery!!! You should check into it. nod

Our grocery store strike just ended here in California... I stayed away from them for five months.

Unfortunately, it's a necessary evil. confused

i don't think anybody in their right mind would wanna deliver a ton of groceries to me, bein that i live on the top floor of my apartment...and they'd have to climb several flights of steps to get to my place....dead

i held off on buying a car for the longest time.... but then finally did. and i'm totally hooked of course. but the flexcar program rox too, i used to rent cars a lot before i bought one.

i actually live close enough to the downtown mpls area that i can walk to and from work and now that the weather's gettin better i was planning to do just that anyway. but i feel for the people this leaves stranded.

if carrie's busy you can also lemme know if you need a ride somewhere handz. wink i got the rest of this week off anyway

handz is a lovely person, online and off. i had the privilege of meeting her a while back. but then - handz don't be mad - i think i forgot exactly what you look like because i approached the wrong person at one of the last parties at the park with my biggest friendliest smile and said 'handz, is that you?' and the person looked at me like wtf?! lol lol

so anyway even if i forgot what handz look like i met her, i know she's a lady and i'm not at all afraid she'd turn out to be an ax-murderer like most of the rest of y'all are on the internet. . nod
