One More Geek News Bit: John Singleton signs on to direct "Luke Cage"

Looks like Luke Cage is going full steam ahead!

John Singleton Confirmed for Luke Cage Source: Variety Wednesday, March 3, 2004

Variety has confirmed a report from last week that John Singleton will direct Sony's Luke Cage...

John Singleton is in negotiations to develop and direct "Luke Cage" for Columbia Pictures. Neal Moritz and his Original Films are producing along with Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.

"Cage" is about a former gang member who is framed for a crime he didn't commit. In prison, he volunteers for a medical experiment that goes awry, giving him superstrength and bulletproof skin. Using his newfound powers, Luke Cage escapes and becomes a hero for hire. Ben Ramsey wrote the script.

The comic book, initially titled "Luke Cage, Hero for Hire," debuted in the 1970s and ran until the mid-1980s, with Cage becoming Marvel's first urban hero. Cage, who picked up the moniker Power Man, eventually teamed with a character called Iron Fist, a martial artist.

A while back, Singleton expressed interest in doing this film. At the time, he said he wanted Ving Rhames for the part. An interesting choice, to be sure. I'm eager to see what Singleton does with this

Luke Cage is a horrible pick.

In the movie, he's going to be just a powerful brawler. Now, in the comic books, he has diamon hard skin, and his assmaster 3000 with a side of butter.

No kid is going to watch this movie, then buy the comic and stay hooked.

I don't think that's really the point. Luke Cage doesn't even have his own title right now (he's a supporting character in "Pulse" and "Daredevil"). I think the aim is to turn into a viable film franchise one of Marvel's third tier characters (Like they did with "Blade"). This still makes Marvel money.

Actually, as I was informed in another bbs, rumor is that Cage will probably get an "Ultimate" title. That's not a bad idea and can work with the story.

And I am a big fan of Alias/Pulse. smile I haven't been too impressed by any of the MAX titles except this one. Thor: Vikings was okay...but reminded me too much like Heavy Metal.

The only MAX title I read is "Supreme Power", which is fantastic.
