If I may:

I am a scenic artist in the film/stage industry. I paint in my spare time and play guitar.

I think art is a very important self expression and brings a lot of happiness.

I think you have a need/desire to get in touch with your artistic side, is that not what is really behind this post?

Here's what I would recommend:

Go out and buy some basic art supplies: a sketchpad you're comfortable with; some good pencils, and whatever mediums used to turn your crank.( I guarantee just walking out of a art supply house will inspire and energize you!)

Here's the KEY: just doodle;just sketch! Put on a Prince cd or something-kick back and draw.

DON'T think you have to draw a masterpiece. DON'T think you have to draw something ANYONE EVER has to see or validate. You don't have to create anything beautiful! It's fine to create shit! Who cares if it's headed for the garbage bin instead of a nice frame!

What is important is the CREATING the art-being alive while doing it. Don't do "DEAD ART"- just going through the motions.

Get MESSY. Create a piece of shit. Who cares if it's ugly! Just feel the utencils in your hand, the paper; go with the flow. Create abstract LIVING art- art that is YOU at this moment- where you are artistically and emotionally. The colors, shapes, or images you're feeling!

Just enjoy the act of creation and being in touch with your emotion of creating and expressing. Listen to that Prince cd, or whatever.

Forget the "self-esteem" issue! It's about getting something out of your system-before you know it you will find art an asset in BUILDING your self esteem, not a product of it.You'll feel more dimensional being an artist again. You'll feel your depth that you're not letting express itself.

You come to this site because you like Prince's music. Look at HIS art. Sometimes it's great ("Lovesexy"), sometimes it's bad ("NPS"). Sometimes he paints beautiful canvases ("TRC") sometimes just sketches ("Chaos and Disorder"). But he let's it all hang out- the good, bad, & ugly! Soo take inspiation from that- it's all part of Prince's big gallery.

SO give my recommendation a shot. Soon, you'll much prefer sitting down with a pad & pencil and expressing yourself to surfing the web aimlessly or wasting hours in front of the Boob Tube!

I hope you can use this advice. After art college, I went through a period like yours, except for the self-esteem. Now I do art on film sets! How cool is that? Who knows where your art skills will take you?

Good luck!

This is valuable advice. I used to draw and paint much more than I do now... now that I have more responsabilities and do not live alone anymore. I used to have sketch book with me at all times and draw whatever and whoever was in front of me. I'd look at a white wall and see things and visions coming through it... I went through lots of stress in the past couple of years and found myself in a period where I drew very little. I started getting back into it (painting) a couple of weeks ago, after having an initial charcoal sketch laid out on canvas for months. It felt good and I realized how much it makes me feel good and satisfied. However, I do need to draw everyday again. Thanks for the reminder!

I also meant to say that although I have not been drawing and painting as much as I should, I have never stopped creating. That's very important to me; I work as a graphic designer / illustrator...
