Why Don't Women Say "Thank You" When You Hold The Door Open For Them?? Been wondering about this lately...
I always--always--hold the door open for women, no matter what...men as well, actually...just a polite thing to do, and my mom always emphasized being a gentleman (so did my sister, actually...lol)..But I've noticed that, when I do hold the door open for a women coming or going into the store, the bank...wherever...it's a coin toss as to whether she'll say "thank you" or not...whether she'll smile or not... Half the time, the woman I've held the door open for will say thank you...a few of them with an appreciative smile... ...but the other half of the time, they either just walk thru as if holding the door open is my job, or they rush thru with their eyes and head pointed down or off to the side, as if they're suspicious of my motives or my intent...I could understand it if I looked scary or something, but please...I've seen squirrels that looked scarier than I do. Men are ALWAYS appreciative when I hold the door open for them...but women are either appreciative, snobby or freaked...lol....So, what gives??

I do the same thing and I'm always amazed at how many just ignore me.
Next time I'm going to let the door swing right back on their arse.

I'm a gay guy and hold the door open for women and yup, some women think it's your job because your ovaries happen to be on the outside. The thing that gets me is when a chick gets bitchy about you being polite. Whatever... 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

dunno if that's the way it is over on the west coast, but here in the midwest you're more likely to hear a "thank you". i always make sure to give guys my thanx when they hold open a door for me.

I always hold doors open for others if I get there first, no matter the gender or age or physical ability. I don't notice whether or not they thank me--I suspect most do--probably because I don't expect or care for thanks. It's just what I do.
I also always thank someone for holding the door for me. Every time. I think the lack of thanking someone could be indicative of how they were parented/brought up. I had parents who literally beat manners into me. I say "please" and "thank you" along with all of the other social niceties without even thinking, but I know many people who hardly ever thank anyone for anything. They don't mean anything negative by it, they just don't know any better cause they didn't have the "home training".

I always look at the man and say "thank you" and with a smile - I show my appreciation. It sure makes them feel good and they smile back too. Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! I don't do it for the thanks...but I notice it when it's not given in one form or another. And I really notice it when it becomes a pattern...just makes me curious.
