No, I read Bastard Out of Carolina years ago (I agree a fantastic book).

I just remembered the movie I'm thinking of is Angels and Insects. There was a costume in the movie that reminded me of a bee, and the characters study an ant colony, I think that's where I was getting confused.

apparently that book is based on insect behavior.
