How long is a piece of string A piece of string is infact infinite length, due to a recent discovery. If you cut a piece of string in half, then cut one half in half, then cut one of those halves in half and so on, the pieces of string will become increasingly small. You will eventually end up with an infinite number of pieces of string, and any length multiplied by infinity gives infinity. Therefore any given piece of string is infinite. From this i can deduce that i am infinitely tall, my hair is infinitely long and the rain outside is going to last for an infinite length of time. Keenmeister

So does that make my love sausage infinitely long!

infinite is an undefined length, so therefore the string is only as big as u think it could possibly be, and a little bit more on top. i agree that an infinite piece of string would get a bit faffy so it would be sense to make the aforesaid infinite string into a much more manageable length using the powers of improbability and reasoning. On the subject of infinatey what are everyone's thoughts on immortality? I personally feel that immortality would provide some purpose in the pittiful existence of humanity. A cynical statement i know. Perhaps if only a select few were blessed with it everyone would benefit from it though. If say one in every thousand people was immortal their ever growing wisdom and knowledge could benefit other mere mortals. Although, their numbers would have to be restiricted, these immortals could'nt have children or otherwise the rising polulation of immortals would cause global devistation. What do the rest of you think, fancy being an elf or a vampire? Keenmeister

Immortality, whilst benefitting some wise and philosophical beings, may be seen as quite annoying by others. After a few laps around eternity, time probably takes its toll on anybody, however strong willed they are. Also these blessed few will undoubtedly have to invest in either plastic surgery or copious supplies of Olay, as after unscrupulous deep thought, the meaning of life will probably turn out to be having younger, or healthier looking skin. Wouldn't it be great for the self esteem of a person as old as time, when at their 3 billionth cheese party another guest, upon realising their true age, says to them "but you dont look a day over seventy eight thousand, four hundred and twelve" Keenmeister

Nice, but flawed... as the division of a finite object into infinite pieces only means that the pieces are infinitely small, not that the object itself is infinite, as infinity divided by infinity = 1, not infinity.

Are you sure it was your theory, Andy? Or are you just cutting and pasting someone else's? (Now Boris has exposed the flaw in the theory, it's a good time to disown it) ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Actually, Infinity isn't really technically a number anyway. When it comes to equations, you
might as well substitute Infinity for "Banoffee Pie", as you can make some equally absurd mathematical statements.... So if... Infinity + Infinity = Infinity and.... Infinity + 1 = Infinity then.... Infinity + Infinity = Infinity + 1 So therefore if you minus Infinity from both sides of the equation... ..... Infinity = 1 . [This message was edited Mon Feb 23 15:22:11 2004 by BorisFishpaw]
