Scents and memory

I've read somewhere that the olfactory sense is particularly effective in jogging memories. I absolutely concur.

I sprayed on some Thierry Mugler "Angel" cologne today and all I can think about is France! France! France! (It's where I first smelled the women's version worn by a friend.) Now I DEFINITELY need to go to Europe this year!

Anyway, what are some of your favorite scents? Or scents, at least, that take your mind back to a particular time or place?

That reminds me of my mom too! She used to rub it all over after she got out of the shower and she would take any excess and rub it on my face. It used to make me feel so special touched

Funny... that cherry almond scent also reminds me of childhood. My mother used to buy Jergens all the time. On Sunday mornings before church, the entire house would smell like some mix of it, her perfume and the cocoa butter in her makeup.

Does anybody have a smell sparked by a memory? Sometimes I will think of a memory and then I will smell something from that memory but it's all in my mind because the smell I'm smelling for that brief second is nowhere near me. This happen to anyone else?

Once, when I was a kid, I was watching the show "Night Court" and drawing a huge sign for a church function. Now, whenever I see the show, I recall the smell of permanent markers and vice versa.

Speaking of surreal...

My grandma passed away 10 years ago. Not too long ago I had a dream, the kind that is so real that you can't tell it's a dream, and I was standing outside my grandma's old house. Everything was silent, no cars, no people not even chirping birds. There was no sound at all.

I walked up to the door and knocked and the door opened. I peeped in and saw that the front room was completely bare. I called out to see if anybody was there and there was no answer.

I pushed open the door and walked in. The house was completely empty. Just the walls, floors and ceiling. I went from room to room reminiscing of all the good times I had there. Then I went to my grandma's old arts and crafts room.

As I opened the door I could see that this room was furnished with all her old stuff. Then as the door swung completely open I broke into sobs. My grandma was standing right there.

I ran to her and cried in her arms telling her how much I missed her. She pulled me away and looked me in the eyes and said "Silly, I haven't gone anywhere. See I'm right here with you". Then I smelled her. It was her scent. As soon as I smelled her I woke up from the sheer emotion of it. I had actually cried in my sleep cuz when I woke up I had tears on my face and in my eyes. And for a fleeting moment in my waking from that dream I could still smell her...

I love you granmda hug
