Like most 'holidays' (yeah, I know we don't actually get the
day off work, but you know what I mean), Valentines Day is pagan in origin. It dates back to the roman feast of Lupercalia (in honor of the god Lupercus). Later on, the Church used the same day to commemorate St Valentine, a priest in rome who performed many secret wedding ceremonies for couples at a time when Emperor Claudius II had outlawed Christian marriages. Valentine was arrested and put to death, and when Rome eventually became more Christian, Valentine replaced Lupercus in the Roman calendar of special days. Mother's day is also pagan in origin, and predates Christianity. Father's Day however is a recent invention created by the card companies to a: balance with Mother's Day, and b: sell more cards.
