you do realize that your losing weight cause your starving your body of certain food types? its great your burning off the fat but atkins can actually cause an increase in weight in the long run...

right now your starving your body...the minute you eat those "banned" foods your body goes in shock and starts to store the food (alert alert...AS FAT) in anticipation of another "starvation" period...

Id recommend you reading "30 Days to A Healthy Diet" and or The Schwarzbein Principle"...

both books are similiar in how they recommend a reduction of carbs (they emphasize substituting them for complex carbs) but they address changing your eating habits over "dieting"...

good luck in your new lifestyle...

nod 12 lbs may seem great to someone that's trying to lose weight, but it's too much weight to lose in just 12 days. You should be losing 12 lbs in about 6 weeks, not 12 days. Anyway, take care of yourself.

if you do get sick of meat you can substitute any meat products with soy or tofu. when i did atkins i was concerned about the cholesterol rise (which, in actuality, doesn't really happen because you leave that phase of the diet quickly enough) so i skippedthe meats and did it vegetarian.

Atkins worked wonders for me. Last summer - from the end of April to about mid-September - I lost about 45 pounds. I gained a few pounds back over the holidays, but I've gone back on induction for a few weeks now in January and I've lost those few pounds. We have a nutritionist who comes to our office for a weight loss program we're doing at work for charity - she's very supportive of the Atkins diet so that made me feel alot better. There are so many low carb options now - at restaurants, grocery stores, etcc - and more is on the way. smile

no offense - i know that there are people out there who follow all kinds of weight-loss concepts - but i would like to know where this nutritionist got her degree, if she approves of the Atkins diet.

just read recently that the Atkin's diet can lead to diverticulitis, which is an infection in the intestine, which can lead to surgery, or perferation of the colon, etc. You need high fiber, some carbs, just to be healthy internally. If you want to know how diverticulitis feels, well, one trip to the ER, a cat scan, 4 bags of anti biotics and 3 prescriptions for them, as well as a week long liquid diet...I could tell you. It isn't pretty, and the tests for it are not over. To see a grown man doubled over in pain and completely weak for over a week is not fun. Just be careful.

i'll ask her.

There are differences of opinion on every diet plan in the world, which is cool with me. I'm only concerned with what works, and i haven't had any adverse healt effects. It might not be for everyone.

what works short term...we are talking about long term adverse reactions...

what people need to get out of their brains is the whole notion of dieting...CHANGE THE LIFESTYLE FOLKS!!

you can eat healthy foods until your belly bursts and still not gain weights..its eating processed/fatty foods thats gonna get cha...and by eliminating whole food groups its gonna end up stunting something in your body... isnt that science 101?

i doubt a few months of limiting carbs to lose the weight you need is going to have that many adverse effect. my goal for maintining my weight loss is to eat a healthy, well-rounded diet and limit sugar, carbs and fats when possible. if i find i've gained some pounds, i'll limit them more. as a means of losing the weight and getting someone to the point they can eat healthier going forward, i think Atkins is great for me.

I hate to sour the joy here...but seriously, I've been there done that with fad diets--and the long-term damage definitely aint worth the short-term thrill of instant weight-loss. I went on a low-carb bogus diet for a year and suffered for years after. It was like I'd hit menopause. No matter what I'd do, the weight wouldn't shift. When you lose more than a quarter of a pound a week (I know that sounds like NOTHING), you are losing water, and bone, not fat. It takes years to gain a serious amount of weight, and if you're serious about keeping it off, life long, you should take just as long to shed it.

Michael Colgan (a nutrition scientist) will teach you the facts. He looks at things from a physiological/scientific perspective, and he's very realistic..the bottom line is ofcourse : fad diets are a waste of money and are extremely bad for you.

That said, if you're feeling good and aren't restricting carbs too much, you must be doing something right and congratulations!!

you do not lose BONE from dieting! falloff

usually, though, fad diets don't work. the point of atkins is not to do it as a fad, though. the point is to re-learn a healthier way to eat. american diets are filled with carbs (especially simple carbs) and it is no coincidence that america is the fattest nation. sure, there are many other factors and contributors as well but the incredibly high amount of carbs that americans eat plays a large part in.

one thing that must be remembered about atkins is that the hardest part of the diet (and most controversial part) is the first few weeks. that's when you are REALLY limiting the bad carbs (fiber carbs don't count in the atkins plan). after this initial few weeks, you gadually introduce those carbs back into your diet but you stop at the point where you begin to add pounds. then, you stay at that level. so, in reality, you are not giing up carbs forever. you are simply changing your diet to include more protiens and less bad carbs. this will give you increased energy and longer stamina with that energy as opposed to a quick burst of energy from carbs and then a big carb crash.

sorry, but you are losing fat on the Atkins Diet. I know i didn't lose 45 pounds of bone and water. The whole point of the Atkins approach is to force your body to burn it's own fat for energy instead of carbs. Yes of course in the first 10 to 14 days you are losing mostly water, but afterwards you burn fat.

A more balanced option, if anyone is interested.

www.dietcure.com

Lots of really important info in this book regarding sugar, caffeine and carbs. Protein is emphasized, but not exagerated.
