YEEEESSS! Finally Star Wars on DVD!! Original 'Star Wars' Trilogy Set for Sept. DVD Bow
Tue Feb 10, 2:46 AM ET Add Movies By Brett Sporich LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Star Wars Trilogy," one of the most-requested DVD episodic film franchises, is expected to be released as a four-disc DVD box set Sept. 21. A global rollout on DVD is expected within days of the domestic release, according to Lucasfilm Ltd. and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The trilogy, featuring the classic franchise films "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi," will be released on three DVD discs, with a fourth disc likely to hold a newly made documentary about the "Star Wars" franchise and never-before-seen footage, among several other bonus materials, said Jim Ward, Lucasfilm's vp marketing and distribution and the DVD trilogy's executive producer. "We are currently in the process of restoring and remastering all three titles for the DVD release, so we're still working on details of the marketing strategy," Ward said. "But I believe that it is safe to say that it will receive tremendous exposure across all media." Lucasfilm and Fox chose the September release date to maximize on holiday gift buying during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment president Mike Dunn said. "We sold about 17 million VHS 'Star Wars' units during two fall release periods in '95 and '97," he said. Combining huge consumer demand for the "Star Wars" franchise with being first out of the gate during the busy fourth-quarter home video market, Fox and Lucasfilm are hoping to cash in on DVD sales throughout the holidays and up until the theatrical release of "Star Wars: Episode III," which is set for release nationwide May, 25, 2005, Dunn and Ward said. Each of the three films in the "Star Wars Trilogy" has been digitally restored and remastered for sound and picture quality, Ward said. "First and foremost, the DVDs will deliver the very best possible sound and picture and take advantage of everything the medium can offer," Ward said. "On top of that, we are creating added-value material that gets inside the creation of the 'Star Wars' films in a fresh and fun way. We want watching this DVD collection to be as memorable as seeing the movies for the first time." The films of the "Star Wars Trilogy" will be sold exclusively as a collection at a still-to-be-determined retail price and not separately, Fox executives said. However, retailers have been known to break up DVD box sets and sell individual titles after the first month out on store shelves. Reuters/Hollywood Reporter Let the rain come down...17 days....

SHUT UP!!! This is the best news I've heard in months! So, the next question is...will this be the orignal releases just "remastered" or the Special Edition versions? Ol' Boy should put both out, cos nutjobs like me would buy both! either way... thanks for the news!

i hope the orginals...i didn't like the rereleased versions in the mid 90s...the extra footage reminds me of the new trilogy (WHICH SUCKS!) Let the rain come down...17 days....

The only question you might ask is whether the DVD release will be the theatrical cuts or the 1997 Special Editions. We'd have to say that it's likely to be neither. Lucas has filmed a number of extra scenes in the last few years, all for insertion into the first three films. We imagine that this will be complimented with much of the additional CGI that populated the Special Editions but let's hope that some of the 97 tweaks - Greedo shooting first, for example - are left on the cutting room floor.

I wouldn't mind if he used the basics from the special edition...there were a number of scenes which were the same just with some touch-ups...but the outright added scenes are horrible... my least fave is in Ep 4...the meeting between Han and Jabba right before he gets Luke and Ben of Tatooine. It looks SO silly, and the make jabba look like this little sniveling, well, worm instead of the looming evil entity Jabba is in Return of the Jedi... :CrossingMyFingers:

These DVDs will be the Special Editions. Word has it that there will be an "Ultimate" version released in 2007, with brand-new cuts of all three films, as well as the original theatrical versions. If this is the case, then all three films will have three different cuts available on DVD when this is all said and done. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

My least favorite insert is the Disney-like song in Return of the Jedi. What on earth was wrong with Lapti Nek? It was good. Now it's not even on the soundtrack, only that there God awful replacement track. Ugh... So what you're saying is that we shouldn't buy 'em now but wait for the ultimate releases? Sounds like a plan, cuz I ain't wasting my money by buying 'em thrice. (Already having them on video. And the videos can make do until 2007. Sure, why not? I can wait. In fact, my mind was already set on waiting, as the initial release plan for the original trilogy on DVD was ultimate editions in 2005.) FREE THE 29 MAY 1993 COME CONFIGURATION!

I'm still waiiting for that to happen to the recent Alien release. A nine DVD set is overdoing it, I think. I really only need the special editions, not the theatrical releases. No way I am spending money on buying the same stuff thrice (also having bought the videos originally). So, split it up, already, so I can get the special editions of the first three movies! I haven't gotten these yet, since I have the first DVD box set. I am curious to see the "directors cuts" of III and Resurrection. As for SW, its not a bad idea to wait, although this is Lucas, and you never know with him. He changes his mind frequently. Still, if you're happy with the videos, don't sweat it. It sounded like a bad outtake from Sesame Street! Just my opinion, however.
