ironically timed with recent events - it's black history month! what are you doing to celebrate?

please don't make this another quaidbowl versus org thing, but it is black history month! woot!

it might sound lame, but i realized it yesterday while i was at the bookstore. they had a display set up and i picked up toni morrison's beloved" and alice walker's "the color purple" neither of which i had read before. i also picked up another copy of "i know why the caged bird sings" cause i gave mine away. (i give a lot of my books away)

i started "the color purple" last ngiht, and it is some really intense writing, i highly recommend it to everyone.

what are you doing to celebrate?

(and PLEASE keep this thread from being a flame war about racism - thank you)

How does one normally "celebrate" such an event, is it not just to serve a a reminder of events passed?

well, i personally use the time to read up on the issues at hand, learn more about what happened with the issues in the past, and try to reflect on the similarities and differences of the two.

CBorgman, you're to be commended for your enlightened approach to making Black History Month relevant to your own life and for recommending that approach to others.

In contrast to recent developments, this is an example of how we should use the power the internet gives us all to make the world a better place. Bravo.

But if there are any of you white folks out there looking for an easier way out, OneMoJam is available to serve as your guest at any Olive Garden in the Washington DC metro area any afternoon this month, now that it looks like I won' be gittin' no inbitations from Massa Chemmie no mo'.

errr... I've got a Bob Marley CD somewhere! I think I'll give it a spin! wink

Actually I went to my recomendation area on Amazon today and the only book I've ever bought there was a Martin Luther King book. So the first 13 recomendations are all Black history books. I reckon I'm gonna buy a few. wink I love reading his seachs, I have some on CD.

The Color Purple is one of my top 10 favourite books EVER! I just love the story and characters. It is so simply written, but so beautiful and meaningful. Alice Walker is one of the best writers and one of my favs (I'm a white gal too lol)

i love it so far, and definately think she is a tremendous author, and one i am going to read more of her stuff once i finish this. i particularly love the letter to god format it is written in, whichnormally annoys me, but works here somehow. and the way that the husband, is "Mr. ___" is a really bizzare but intriguing way of doing it.

Because of the recent crap on here, I think I'm just going to continue to be a positive person and to do all I can to diminish stereotypes of black people. I think its important that not only black children see positive black role models but that all people see that black people are more than entertainers and athletes.

I have a cousin who is a doctor, another cousin is 2nd in is high school class, a friend that owns a spa, two relatives that are engineers, a friend thats an artist, etc...successful educated people.

The world needs to see the successes of african americans and not to think that someone like Oprah is a fluke or a "special" situation.

So this month, I'm going to be the best me I can be for my total community, black, white or whatever.

I hear that! Something bothers me about kids being encouraged to play basketball. (Guess, I could say sports in general, but when it comes to black youth, basketball just seems to be the sport of choice.) My thing is, get the education, and someday, you just might OWN the team
