Another Boxer Falls From Grace

and this guy was the spitting image of my brother at one time nod

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) - Former middleweight champion Michael Nunn was sentenced Friday to more than 24 years in prison for buying two pounds of cocaine from an undercover agent more than a year ago.

The 40-year-old Nunn was arrested Aug. 6, 2002, at a hotel in his hometown of Davenport, Iowa, moments after paying an agent $200 for one kilogram of cocaine that had an estimated street value of $24,000. He pleaded guilty in May to one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.

Nunn, a former IBF middleweight and WBA super middleweight champion, was sentenced to 292 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge William Gritzner.

Gritzner agreed to a higher sentencing guideline after considering Nunn's long history in drug trafficking and the likelihood he used a firearm during drug deals.

During the three-day sentencing hearing, prosecutors called witnesses who testified about Nunn's drug activity dating back as far as 1993. Nunn, who accepted responsibility for buying the drugs in August 2002, denied his involvement in drug trafficking, pointing out that several of the witnesses were in prison and could have their sentences reduced for providing testimony.

Nunn, who was defiant throughout the hearing Friday, accused government lawyers of lying and scheming to bring him down.

"You guys haven't shown me nothing," Nunn said in his statement to the judge. "Where are your facts, Mr. Prosecutor?"

Nunn had a 58-4 record with 38 knockouts and earned at least $6 million as one of the world's top boxers in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Nunn's attorney, Anthony Schumann, said he would consider appealing the sentence or asking Gritzner to reconsider.

It real crazy when you consider that Grubman girl ran over 16 people with her Mercedes SUV at a Hamptoms club. She then proceded to call them white trash and drove away. Now she's in jail! I think she got six months. disbelief

24 years seems harsh!

You get less than that here for killing a bunch of people.

Damn. What a life. I guess looking for a publisher for his autobiography is the logical thing to do at this stage. Thanks for the info.

As someone who knows boxing pretty well...its a real shame 2 see my fellow southpaw brotha throw away his life like many do over drugs.

When Nunn was on top the man at least as a middleweight champ got the job done pretty good. He beat the crafty "Magic Man" aka Mooche, Marlon Starling and had a seriously beautiful one punch knock-out of Kalambay who was a tough nut & could box in his own right.

Nunn had some good skillz...he was no Sugar Ray but put enough fear into Leonard where he didn't want none of Nunn. Thus he picked Terry Norris instead and we know how that sad fight went.

Nunn was a real let down at 168lbs...Losing 2 Steve Littles was awful but like the Toney fight he was ahead on his way 2 win...The Toney fight looking back U can forgive seeing how Toney went on 2 become a boxing powerhouse but the Littles fight was the real end of a pretty good boxer in Nunn.

Mr. LoveSexy, you know your stuff!!!

I remember Nunn's pro debut on ESPN back in '84. He had the moustache back then. I even watched his dreadful bouts with Alex Ramos and Iran Barkley. Yet he could also impress with speed and power, like he did against Frank Tate, Juan Roldan, and Kalambay, who had become the first person to defeat Mike McCallum.

What a waste of talent. Another talented southpaw who f**ks it up, ala Hector Camacho Sr., Pernell Whitaker, and, if he doesn't shape up, Ricardo Williams...

Thank U 4 that my brotha U know your stuff 2. U mentioned some great fighters who I loved and supported. Being a former southpaw boxer I loved watching Sweet Pea Whitaker. 135-140...could not touch him feel me? And at 147 had some great moments. But I was really let down when I heard he messed with drugs...damn man why mess-up God's gift 2 U? But he did and the fact U wouldn't admit 2 it was sad and down right sorry if not sick! He beat Chavez He beat Ramirez in there first fight...but the brotha thought he Beat Trinidad??? Give me a break...He started out great against Trinidad but he clearly lost. And that last ESPN fight...Like Mr. T said "U should've neva came back!" haha..

Then there was the "The Body Snatcher" Mike McCallum. another all time great and just a great combo of a intelligent boxing mind with solid power...would kill U 2 the body like a surgeon. Nigel Been once said: He'd rather fight Roy Jones instead of Mike cuz McCallum broke down your body bad! Well respected he was and fought great no matter how old he was...lol since there was always small controversy about his age. But yeah Great knockout of a young hard punching Julian Jackson...and Donald Curry...that was some exciting stuff! Layed the brotha clean out picture perfect!

I'd study all these great fighters and have a fat collection of great fights and fighters...And like I said being a southpaw I'd watch Hagler Whitaker, 2 pick up certain things I might wanna try and even the right handed greats from old skool Sugar Ray Robinson 2 the 50-0-1 Ricardo Lopez ...as close 2 perfect as U can get...I was blessed 2 see Lopez fight in Mexico when he got that lone blemish against Alverez. Seen Chavez fight in Mexico. Met and was pushed by Duran there cuz he didn't want 2 sign a boxing card I had of him...true asshole but he signed it 2yrs later...lol Met Alexis Arguello true gentleman Carbajal, Zab, Virgil Hill, Roy Jones, Mayweater Jr, Vitali, Kevin Kelly, Tracy Patterson, Junior Jones,etc... When I did Mr. Boxing on the Fan a radio show I got 2 do a phone interview with Tito Trinidad when he was still 147lb King and he was a cool gentleman... I can keep on but let me shut up but boxing has always been a big part of my life and when U get 2 meet and hang out with some of these cats its truly a great experience...

I also was a PR/promotions man 4 former best friend and Champ Steve Forbes who was the IBF 130lbs champ, and he fucked up and lost the belt cuz he couldn't make weight...he ate like a pig, tons of fast food and couldn't make weight...thats sorry and shameful. Yeah he used his status & took a lady from me cuz she was better lookin then the one he had...thus ended a friendship.

At the end of the day with all the fuck ups in the sport there R some true good guys. Boxing has been pretty good 2 me but I pray 4 this sport 2 really clean up and get much better.
