Testing myself as to what i can take and whether or not i will feel better. I'm getting older and good health rises higher and higher on my list. Life gets mighty precious when there's less of it to waste.

You really think you will be more healthy, cutting out meat and dairy?

Well, you gotta read up on that shit and make sure you still get your protein and stuff, otherwise you will become ill.

Good Luck! hug

this won't come as a surprise to you, but...

woot! !!!

congratulations - you'll be amazed how great you feel!

probably THE best book on going veg i've found is "Becoming Vegetarian" by Brenda Davis, R.D. and Vesanto Melia, M.S., R.D. (there is also a "Becoming Vegan" issue - both are excellent!) Both go into detail about nutrition, and the various health benefits.

if you don't like tofu (i happen to love it - it's a lot like egg white omelettes, not much flavor to it, but very versatile), there is a broad range of protein sources.

good luck, tell us how you're doing! and if there's anything i can do to help, let me know!

It'll take a lot of discipline, but it's not impossible. It's a mind over matter thing. I've never done it, and don't plan to (I don't drink milk, but cook with it sometimes - and I like cheese too much), but I've gone an entire month without red meat. Fish I did eat. I cut out all junk food too. Lost 13 pounds in a month. After the first 2 weeks it's easy...at least it was for me.

The key word is discipline; we've been conditioned to eat a certain way for so long (not only since our childhoods, but as young adults conditioned by ourselves), that it becomes second nature to keep up those habits. I'm not saying it's "all" bad (depends on the diet), but I think you get the gist.

Forgot to mention; I was on mainly a liquid diet when I did that.

Good Luck... I went vegitatiran for a few months some time back.. I just gave up meat... Just the thought of giving up dairy AND dairy leaves you with the thought of not much to eat but bread and veggies...

Good Luck and stay strong! rose

I go back and forth with meat. Sometimes, I eat so much of it, that I can't stomach it anymore. So I cut back on it for awhile. And then I start feeling off, so I go back on it for awhile.

It's been about 2 months since I had any notable amount of meat. I'm starting to want it again.

Well if you cut out dairy, that's more vegan than just vegetarian. I wouldn't recommend that and it probably isn't very safe to do something dramatic to your body like that.
I would recommend that you get all your milk necessary for calcium needs and you'll get 40 percent of your daily protein right there. Then getting the FDA's recommended 6 servings of whole grains a day should give you close to the other 60 percent. Oatmeal, cereal, brown rice, whole wheat bread (my favorite delicious recipe is at http://www.cooks.com/rec/...98,00.html )
But if you don't get a lot of fiber right now, you want to only up it about one serving per day each week because it can wreak havoc on your system. If you normally eat fish to get those great amino acids and omega 3s, you can still get them in things like olive oil, flax seed oil, and flax seeds.
And I imagine that you would be better off going more than a month once you've started since one's taste buds adapt to a new diet in about 8 weeks. Worth staying on the wagon.
Of course you should talk to your physician before making any radical dietary changes.

Hmmm... my diet options are weird and very unlikely and oh so boring. confused It is my goal to eat more balanced, especially eating A strict Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian Diet.

(Easy read book/literature)

~Stocking the Vetetarian Pantry

It may be difficult to commit to... especially if you really crave the taste/need for meat. For me, I never really liked meat growing up... so it has been an easy change/transition for me. rose
