magnolia (easily his best)

Did he get a nomination for that? If he did he should have won it...
I think he's a damn good actor, he just picks horrible movies...

people always think of him as just another pretty boy with no talent, but he really is a much better actor than most people give him credit for. it would help him a lot if he did more acting movies and less action (MI 1 & 2, Etc)

shake

his acting is too surface for my taste...even in magnolia..it was all show...which as we all know is easy as fuck..give me samantha morton's subtelty anyday...

he did get a nomination for it, and IMHO, he should have won for it. michael caine won the award for "ciderhouse rules" over him. i like michael caine, but it was the same character he's always done, just in a better script, where you had cruise doing something totally different, and totally incredible.

hye does tend to play surface alot, but that was what him so incredible in magnolia. the surface acting was covering the subtle true identity of the character. two levels is difficult to pull off, he did it well in that one.

Tom Cruise and "The Last Samurai" virtually snubbed (except for Ken Wantanabe, who was fantastic!)...

The Oscar Gods seem to have no regard for this man's talent. He is constantly snubbed for great work.

what great work? minority report? mission impossible? the firm? days of thunder? vanilla sky? please don't say far and away...cuz that's where that film should have gone, LOL.

i haven't seen the last samurai but i've heard its very good. it probably is. but you need to make more than one decent movie before you get awards.

yes, i did forget about magnolia. he was really good in that. the whole cast was brilliant! rain man, a few good men and the firm were very typical roles and not stand out performances, i thought. i was not terribly impressed with any of them. i'll catch last samurai on video eventually, though. too much hype for me to miss it altogether.

so, i suppose the only two flicks i really thought he was decent in were magnolia and risky business.

the full on level of machismo sexism performance that is the image the character is trying to sell himself as and the hurt little boy spinning massive lies to cover his pain that he really is. that's the whole point of the reporter character in the movie. she forces him to confront who he truly is by exposing him to himself as a fraud.
