Best Picture
LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)
LOST IN TRANSLATION (Focus Features)
MASTER & COMMANDER (20th Century Fox)
MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)
SEABISCUIT (Universal Pictures)

likely to be LOTR, not so much for that film itself as for the massive undertaking of all three. but i would not be terribly suprised if LOST managed to win.

"Lost In Translation" or maybe "Mystic River"...
The rest of those movies weren't all that, especially that "Master And Commander" crap, why the hell it got a nomination is beyond me...

Achievement in Directing
Fernando Meirelles for CITY OF GOD (Miramax)
Peter Jackson for THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)
Peter Weir for MASTER & COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (20th Century Fox)
Sofia Coppola for LOST IN TRANSLATION (Focus Features)
Clint Eastwood for MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)

Peter Jackson for the same reason above, although Sofia poses his biggest threat.

Fernando Mereilles hands down... The rest don't even come close IMO...

Best Actor in a Leading Role
Johnny Depp in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (20th Century Fox)
Ben Kingsley in HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG (DreamWorks Pictures)
Jude Law in COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)
Bill Murray in LOST IN TRANSLATION (Focus Features)
Sean Penn in MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)

Here is probaby one of the few categories in which an upset even has room to happen. Bill Murray and Sean Penn both turned in dynamic performances, and both are long overdue for an oscar.

Bill Murray...

Best Supporting Actor
Alec Baldwin in THE COOLER (Lions Gate Films)
Benicio Del Toro in 21 GRAMS (Focus Features)
Djimon Hounsou in IN AMERICA (Focus Features)
Tim Robbins in MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)
Ken Watanabe in LAST SAMURAI (Warner Bros.)

Tim Robbins, easy win

Where the hell is Ossie Davis in this??

Best Actress in a Leading Role
Keisha Castle-Hughes in WHALE RIDER (Newmarket Films )
Diane Keaton in SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE (Columbia Pictures )
Samantha Morton in IN AMERICA (Focus Features)
Charlize Theron in MONSTER (Newmarket Films )
Naomi Watts in 21 GRAMS (Focus Features)

charlize theron, easy win

Agreed, haven't seen the movie, but she's easy on the eyes, same goes for Naomi Watts...

Best Supporting Actress
Shohreh Aghdashloo in HOUSE OF SAND & FOG (DreamWorks Pictures)
Patricia Clarkson in PIECES OF APRIL (United Arists)
Marcia Gay Harden in MYSTIC RIVER (Warner Bros.)
Holly Hunter in THIRTEEN (Fox Searchlight Pictures)
Renee Zellwegger in COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)

Renee zellwegger, easy win

Holly Hunter... Haven't seen "Cold Mountain" yet, but I hate that Zellwegger monster...

Best Original Screenplay
THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS (Miramax) by Denys Arcand
DIRTY PRETTY THINGS (Miramax) by Steven Knight
FINDING NEMO (Walt Disney Pixar) by Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson, David Reynolds
IN AMERICA (Focus Features) Written by Jim Sheridan, Naomi Sheridan and Kirsten Sheridan
LOST IN TRANSLATION (Focus Features) by Sofia Coppola

lost in translation and in america are both searing, but nemo is a much loved piece. bit of a crap shoot, but probably will go to in america.

"Lost In Translation"...

Best Adapted Screenplay
AMERICAN SPLENDOR by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman
CITY OF GOD by Braulio Mantovani
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson
MYSTIC RIVER by Brian Helgeland
SEABISCUIT by Gary Ross

Seabiscuit, Mystic River, and LOTR all have a good shot. probably will be Seabiscuit.

"City Of God" or "Mystic River"...

Best Foreign-Language Film
THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS - Canada
EVIL - Sweden
THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI - Japan
TWIN SISTERS - The Netherlands
ZELARY - The Czech Republic

hard to say, i have not seen any of these yet, although i have heard good things about twin sisters.

"City Of God" didn't get nominated?! What a fucking scam!

Best Animated Feature Film
BROTHER BEAR - Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker
FINDING NEMO - Andrew Stanton
THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE - Sylvain Chomet

finding nemo, easy win

Agreed...

Achievement in Art Direction
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING (Lions Gate Films)
LAST SAMURAI (Warner Bros.)
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)
MASTER & COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (20th Century Fox)
SEABISCUIT (Universal Pictures)

LOTR, easy win

Agreed...

Achievement in Cinematography
CITY OF GOD (Miramax)
COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING (Lions Gate Films)
MASTER & COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (20th Century Fox)
SEABISCUIT (Universal Pictures)

tough call. probably master and commander

"Girl With A Pearl Earring" or "City Of God"...

Achievement in Costume Design
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING (Lions Gate Films)
LAST SAMURAI (Warner Bros.)
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)
MASTER & COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (20th Century Fox)
SEABISCUIT (Universal Pictures)

tough call. probably girl with a pearl earring

I haven't got a fucking clue...

Best Documentary Feature
BALSEROS
CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS
THE FOG OF WAR
MY ARCHITECT
THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND

capturing the friedmans, easy win

Agreed...

Best Film Editing
CITY OF GOD (Miramax)
COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)
MASTER & COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (20th Century Fox)
SEABISCUIT (Universal Pictures)

tough call... no idea

"City Of God" hands down...

Achievement in Makeup
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)
MASTER & COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (20th Century Fox)
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (20th Century Fox)

tough call, since almost all of LOTR and pirates effects that would have been make-up in the old days were CGI.

Probably LOTR...

Best Original Score
BIG FISH
COLD MOUNTAIN (Miramax)
FINDING NEMO (Walt Disney Pixar)
HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (New Line Cinema)

Danny Elfman deserves an oscar for all the incredible scores he has done and not won once, but big fish hardly seems the score to break his losing streak. it is highly likely LOTR's composer John Williams will win, but it is also possible that Michael Newman could win for nemo.

Howard Shore did LOTR...
Being a fan of Danny Elfman I think it's due time for him to get some recognition from those clueless cunts at the academy...

Original Song
"Into the West" - THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
"A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" - A MIGHTY WIND
"Scarlet Tide" - COLD MOUNTAIN
"The Triplets of Belleville"- THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE
"You Will Be My Ain True Love" - COLD MOUNTAIN

probably into the west

Not important, they're all crap...

Can we get back on topic? Okay... rolleyes

Tom Cruise and "The Last Samurai" virtually snubbed (except for Ken Wantanabe, who was fantastic!)...

The Oscar Gods seem to have no regard for this man's talent. He is constantly snubbed for great work.

The only good news today, Nicole Kidman was not nominated... thank God.

Too soon to give my twocents about the noms... I'll pick the winners (or attempt to) later.

Thanks for the thread cborgman! woot!

i agree with you about nicole. i love her and jude both, and think both of them are very good actors in a very subtle way, but their performances while very good in the film, are tediously boring. i was suprised to see jude nominated at all. i honestly thought that spot would go to tom cruise.

see:
magnolia (easily his best)
rain man
a few good men
the firm
the last samurai

people always think of him as just another pretty boy with no talent, but he really is a much better actor than most people give him credit for. it would help him a lot if he did more acting movies and less action (MI 1 & 2, Etc)

It's based on a semi-autobiographical novel by swedish writer Jan Guillou, about when he went to a high-end boarding school in his youth, and about the pennalism he encountered there. Very moving, the young man playing the main character had virtually no acting experience worth talking about before doing this. He's excellent in it. It's worth seeing.

yea, as much as possible. i am a total junkie that way. this is my superbowl!

plus, i am sooo sick of crap movies which seem to become the majority more and more here in america. when the oscar nominations come out, it's like being handed a list that says: "go... see that which is good and/or innovative" and i end up seeing all the good stuff.

And well I have to say I was pretty disappointed when I didn't hear it back in the movies...

i have to think it's because he doesn't go the traditional route with lots of soft strings and what not.
