Not that I thought her performance was oscar-winning but it was defintely oscar -nomination worthy-NICOLE KIDMAN, cold mountain. But she got snubbed! Very shocked!

I still have yet ot see CHarlize in "Monster" but I so want to!!!

'Rings' Tops List of Oscar Nominees


LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Epic "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" topped the list of Oscar nominees on Tuesday with 11 nominations followed by seafaring adventure, "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" with 10 as each was included in the best film category.

Joining them on the list of nominees for best movie were crime thriller "Mystic River," horse racing tale "Seabiscuit," and "Lost in Translation," about two disenchanted Americans in Tokyo.


Best actor nominations went to Johnny Depp for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," Ben Kingsley for "House of Sand and Fog," Jude Law for "Cold Mountain," Bill Murray for "Lost in Translation" and Sean Penn for "Mystic River."


Best actress nominees were Charlize Theron in "Monster," Naomi Watts in "21 Grams," Samantha Morton for "In America," Diane Keaton in "Something's Gotta Give," and Keisha Castle-Hughes for "Whale Rider."


Nominations for directing went to Peter Jackson for "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," Clint Eastwood for "Mystic River," Peter Weir for "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," Sofia Coppola for "Lost in Translation" and Fernando Meirelles for "City of God."


Supporting actor nominations were given to Alec Baldwin in "The Cooler," Benicio Del Toro for "21 Grams," Djimon Hounsou for "In America," Tim Robbins in "Mystic River," and Ken Watanabe in "The Last Samurai."


Nominations for supporting actress went to Renee Zellweger for "Cold Mountain," Holly Hunter in "Thirteen," Marcia Gay Harden in "Mystic River," Patricia Clarkson for "Pieces of April" and Shohreh Aghdashloo in "House of Sand and Fog."


The Oscars (news - web sites), which are award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (news - web sites), are the U.S. film industry's top honors and will be given out in a gala ceremony from Los Angeles on February 29.

Very boring and predictable list. Johnny Depp?? WTF! The movie was ok and he was ok in it, but Oscar worthy? I don't think so. I believe Charlize Theron will win and Bill Murray and Lord of the Rings. Nothing exciting here .

actually, there were a few suprises... the girl from whale rider being nominated for best actress is a very pleasant suprise. seabiscuit being nominated is a bit of a suprise, since the long time it has been since it was released made it a long shot and usually movies released early or the middle of the year get forgotten by the time nominations come out. (donnie brasco and wonder boys - two perfect examples)

Holly Bat-crap...thats awesome...and thank god they stopped nominating Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman for mediocre work...heck, Patricia Clarkson and Djimon Hounsou were even nominated...FYI: This is the third year in a row that minorities *werent* overlooked...Many assumed Djimon (Amistad) would be overlooked in what some may call the best supporting performance this year...I think its awesome that minorities are getting nominated for roles that are justifiably worthy of getting notice...

the indies faught back and thank god for that!!!

(ps..i think we as viewers of acting seem to ignore the skill required in pulling off certain performances..many laughed at halle berry's win saying it wasnt justified but then you had skilled actors shocked at her wonderful performance..wouldnt they know? ditto kim bassinger in LA Confidential...yet Meryl Streep said that film nior is the most difficult of genres to pull off and that she felt kim was the only female in recent history to pull it off...she even went as far as saying she couldnt do it...)

Im so glad they gave Depp that nom..that's a win in itself just being nominated for Pirates character. Im glad they recognized that peformance of him doing Keity Richards .

very typical. each year, oscar gets more and more irrelevant (to me). i used to watch and have little oscar parties. i used to know all the films that were nominated...regardless of category...and most of them were really good in one way or another. but ever since the year of the english patient, it has gone down. there is always the sweeping film. there's always the trendy winner. there's always the shocking nomination or omittence. the academy is all about who you know, who's ass you've kissed and who's blacklisted you because they didn't like something you said. i love johnny depp. think he's a great actor. but, really, an oscar nom for that character? puh-lease. and lost in translation...oh man, if that wasn't the most hyped turd i've ever seen. i can't believe it took 2 hours to tell that story. it could've been told in a quarter of the time and been much more enjoyable as a short. but, alas, when you are the daughter of coppola and your films are trendy, you can be guaranteed a shot at oscar.

other than the red carpet, to see who's wearing what and, sometimes more importantly "WHY?", i will not be tuning in this year.

while i have't seen most of the films this year...nope, not even lord of the rings...keisha castle-hughes really was brilliant. diane keaton will probably get this award though, since she seems to have mastered playing the same character in all of her more recent films.

As for the noms, I have to say I'm happy that In America got multiple nominations. I thought this was a FABULOUS movie with powerful performances all around. I think it's best shot for winning is for writing, but I hope the acting nominations cause more people to check it out.

As for Best Supporting Actress, I know Renee has the momentum right now, but I hope that doesn't blind voters to the amazing performance Holly Hunter turned in for Thirteen...

Very Sprising that "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" got 10 nominations. I thought "The Last Samurai" was a better movie.

Great that they finally discovered Patricia Clarkson. And equally wonderful that Bill Murray gets the attention he deserves.

On the other hand, the Academy Awards are never to be taken seriously. There are waaay too many members of the jury for a more personal, original or provocative movie to ever have a chance of winning. Rather, it´s the movies that a huge bunch of people can agree on being at least decent (such as LOTR or Master and Commander) that get every single golden statue. Simple maths/statistics, really. And such a shame.

Anyway, Tom Cruise has definitely received a lot of praise in recent years. Especially for his performances in Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia, where he is indeed excellent. I didn´t think much of him before those movies came out though.
