LOTR - The Retun of The King...Probably will get an Oscar....

Peter Jackson's film trilogy finally reaches an end, and I can only breath another huge sigh of disappointment. Not one to express my sadness over the fact that the trilogy has come to an end, but one to express my sadness at just how poorly these films were done.
The first Lord of the Rings film was exciting, and yet too quickly paced and featuring tons of stiff, uncomfortable dialogue. The second Lord of the Rings only went further downhill, feeling rushed and lazy, and looking as if it had been cut and pasted together with sticky tape. Epic shots inserted haphazardly into the narrative throughout, some of the worst performances ever witnessed, and CGI that kept getting more cringe-inducing and lifeless as things went on. Return of the King is a step-up from The Two Towers, yet it still isn't the perfect cinematic experience that I was expecting. Even with its flaws, the first film had an energy to it and a ton of passion that one could see oozing through every frame. That sense of energy is sadly missing from both The Two Towers and Return of the King, even though it takes the word "epic" to the extreme.

All in All ...i guess with all that being said...it will lead the pack for the Oscars this year...but i hope they will maybe give Eastwood bow the Oscar for Mystic River...

How sad that you find so much to criticize. I especially like this bit: "see just how lazy filmmaking can get" -- surely you wouldn't consider seven years of effort lazy?

The trilogy was excellent, from start to end.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

I have to disagree.
I think Peter Jackson did an incredible job, bringing what
most people thought was an unfilmable book, to the big screen.
Almost all your criticisms of the movies are actually
criticisms of the story, which JRR Tolkien wrote, not Peter
Jackson's film-making. While they are not perfect movies,
I think Peter Jackson managed to walk the line between 'being
true to the book' and 'making an exiting, believable movie'
very well indeed. Personally, I've found that almost all the
issues I had with any of the movies were solved with the
extended DVD editions, and I expect the same will be true of
Return Of The King (But I still think Peter Jackson made the
right choice in using the shorter edits of the movies in the
theatres).

wow, you must have really missed the boat. I could get into what a great piece of film making it is but I really don't need to, it speaks for itself. It was the best of the three and totally grand and Epic storytelling. No other movie this year even comes close.

Ummm, well maybe the first two Godfather films. I don't even consider that a trilogy, since the final film sucked huge donkey gonads. You criticize the LOTR trilogy, which I consider damned near flawess, yet you laud the film that gave us the single WORST acting ever with Sofia Coppola? (and I'm including EVERY porn I've ever seen in that. Sofia was absolutley abyssmal, and made that film into a damned comedy). To me, the first two Godfather films are brilliant, while the third might as well have been a Zucker/Abrahms/Zucker parody a'la Airplane.

Oh, and Princess Bride is a comedy with a fantasy setting. If you had noted Ridley Scott's Legend I might have taken you seriously. Now, I just have to laugh. Don't assume that everyone on here is "young people" who haven't seen "classic films". Plenty of folks on here are quite versed in film, myself included.

probably... although IMHO lost in translation deserves to win

I finally saw this last night and thougt it was a good movie, except maybe for the "happy" ending...
I haven't seen any really great movies the last year that would deserve the Oscar for Best Movie... Or maybe "Bubba Ho-Tep", but that probably won't even get a nomination...
It would be nice to see Ossie Davis ("Bubba Ho-Tep") win the Oscar for best male and otherwise Bill Murray ("Lost In Translation")...
LOTR was nice but IMHO not good enough to win some award for Best Movie...
2003 was a crap year for movies...

it can't sweep, it doesn't even have the potential to sweep. people say this all the time without understanding what an oscar sweep is.

the only time a film "sweeps" is when it wins the following four awards:
best picture
best director
best actor
best actress

that is what a sweep is. there have only been 3 films that have done it, and LOTR won't be one of em, since it doesn't even have half of the nominations it needs to sweep.

that is so not the definition of a sweep...titanic "swept" the awards and didnt win a single acting award...

sweeping the major awrads is what your referencing...and if memory serves correctly..isnt it four films? it was three after Silence Of The Lamb..but didnt something else do it recently? im drunk..dont hold me to this..

i havent even seen the film but the first and second were way way way too long...the editing was horrid...me thinks people are more inclined to give ROFK the win for the collective work of all three films but...why? each film should stand on its own and while this film is recieving oodles of awards from critic groups the bulk of the reviews seem to be "extremely good"..but not "excellent"..

but its all politics..this will win cause the other two didnt...and once this thing hits dvd my ass will be hating the long sit. lol
