I got shot in the shin and as I bent over to inspect my wound I spotted Prince walking past my shoe. He gave me a copy of New Power Soul for free and I've never looked back since.

Tell me a story!! when i was a kid in my father's houe, we were not allowed to listen to any secular music as my father was a complete religious zealot. it was disney or christian, nothing else. the summer of 1984, we moved to tennessee, and my father took a job that kept him away from the house a lot (thank god) and my mother and i would listen to the radio, enjoying the music he wouldn't let us hear. i heard "let's go crazy" and i did go crazy. i was a 7 year old in love wiht prince. whenever my father came back, the radio would go back onto it's normal religious station, but prince and madonna were always my mother and i's little secret love. later when i was placed into a foster home in 1990, the first thing i did when i got enough money was to go out and buy a lot of prince and madonna, and i have been hooked ever since. maybe that is why i detest all of prince's latest religious music... maybe subconciously it makes me feel like my father won.

Something similar happened to me. I was stuck in the middle of the Indian ocean on a small sailboat that was struck by lightning and started to sink. Just as I was about to go under, Prince floated on over in a yellow rubber dinghy and gave me a copy of Dirty Mind for free and I've never looked back since.

I saw him before I heard his music. My cousin had the poster from Controversy, don't know why a wet man in a thong drove me crazy, but he did, it was 1982, just before he released 1999. I then made it my mission to hear his music and have continued to be crazy since. I used to play Dirty Mind on my toy record player...with 3 nickels attached to the arm...fake needle you know. Now that's devotion...

..at about age 7 or so when I saw him on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. I was GLUED to the tv and just knew he was the most wonderful thing to ever grace a television screen. I also remember my babysitter's son making fun of him because he didn't say much- telling me "Look at him! He from special-ed, he from special-ed...!" at that point I recall throwing my Darcy doll at him and nearly gouging his eye out for having no taste in entertainers, lol!
Later I would go on to see my first Prince concert during the Controversy era, at about 12 or 13 (my cousin took me, and NATURALLY my parents had NO idea what that show was going to be like otherwise they would have FLAT-OUT REFUSED that I go),and once I saw him perform "Do Me Baby" on that king sized bed, oh LORD, was it was all over...!!!
