Donne Darkho *spoilers alert*

Alright, I finally saw this film on DVD and I agree that it is an excellent film and thought provoking.

It is brilliantly shot, the Director (Kelly) sure knows how to point a camera and has great skill for a 25 year old.

Despite the fact that I really like it I feel it is a little over-rated by some i.e those that say it is the greatest film of all time (perhaps they confuse the word 'greatest' with 'favourite'?).

Although it is full of some great dialogue, acting, humour, scenes etc it suffers from being a bit too vague about it's meaning, and i mean in the "plot" sense. To fully understand the film you have to to the films website and read the book "Philosophy in Time Travel" and various other bits and pieces (like listening to the commentary by Kelly).

In my opinion, to be a truly great film all of the answers should be contained within the film itself, even if they are not immediately apparent. There is absolutely no clue given that they are actually in a tangent universe, why the bunny is helping him etc. Now, i'm not saying we need to be spoon fed but the answers should be there and not on a webpage somewhere.

I dont think that there is any feeling of impending doom about the end of the world. It doesn't feel like it is acually going to happen. There is also nothing in the film to give you the impression that it would save the primary universe. It is only after you read up and gain this knowledge that you understand the sacrifice Donnie made.

The above sounds negative but i dont mean it that way as overall i really enjoyed the film (loved the soundtrack!!).

Anyone like to comment?

Actually, that was the point...Kelly wanted to audience to be guessing as to whether or not Donnie was a paranoid schizophenic...that was actually more the real plot than anything. The director chose to have us all relive what we just saw after the movie ends, instead of knowing all along what it is we're witnessing...Donnie himself didn't know if he was schizophrenic; neither did we...so we discover the truth right about the same time he does...he smiles and sighs in relief at the knowledge...we watch and understand the profoundness of what's about to happen to him. If it had been obvious to all that the world/universe was indeed coming to an end, and not just the visions of a teenage schizophrenic, then we would have been denied that shared moment with the protagonist.

...or not.

Okay, but I never got the impression he was that worried about it either, not so much the other people who obviously had no idea.

What dom you think about the need to go outside the movie to read that book to know what is going on?

i saw this movie in the middle of the night when i was...ummm... "recovering"...

yet it still didnt grab me...maybe i needed to be in a sober state...normally being half-baked aids to the enjoyment aids experiencing indie freak films...
