My aunts and uncles went into sooo much debt when my grandmother died. My mom is already making payments on her arrangements. She wants to be creamated. I think I would want that too. I mean what's the point of having a space in a cemetary with all these other people around? It's just what society tell us we should do.

You can have your own rememberance "altar" at home, with the ashes in an urn but that's not even necessary. Just a picture and maybe some personal items and some candles. The body has separated from the spirit and it becomes one with everything, so what is the point of hanging on to the physical body?

I'm not sure if these are still frequent, but along the North Indian border of the Himalayas (more in Nepal and Tibet), "sky burials" like Tron joked about were popular among Buddhists.
