Lots of really important info in this book regarding sugar, caffeine and carbs. Protein is emphasized, but not exagerated.

I hate to sour the joy here...but seriously, I've been there done that with fad diets--and the long-term damage definitely aint worth the short-term thrill of instant weight-loss. I went on a low-carb bogus diet for a year and suffered for years after. It was like I'd hit menopause. No matter what I'd do, the weight wouldn't shift. When you lose more than a quarter of a pound a week (I know that sounds like NOTHING), you are losing water, and bone, not fat. It takes years to gain a serious amount of weight, and if you're serious about keeping it off, life long, you should take just as long to shed it.

you do not lose BONE from dieting! falloff

usually, though, fad diets don't work. the point of atkins is not to do it as a fad, though. the point is to re-learn a healthier way to eat. american diets are filled with carbs (especially simple carbs) and it is no coincidence that america is the fattest nation. sure, there are many other factors and contributors as well but the incredibly high amount of carbs that americans eat plays a large part in.

one thing that must be remembered about atkins is that the hardest part of the diet (and most controversial part) is the first few weeks. that's when you are REALLY limiting the bad carbs (fiber carbs don't count in the atkins plan). after this initial few weeks, you gadually introduce those carbs back into your diet but you stop at the point where you begin to add pounds. then, you stay at that level. so, in reality, you are not giing up carbs forever. you are simply changing your diet to include more protiens and less bad carbs. this will give you increased energy and longer stamina with that energy as opposed to a quick burst of energy from carbs and then a big carb crash.

i actually agree with you on the American obsession with simple carbohydrates. however, the Atkins answer of replacing simple carbs with animal protein is dangerous.

animal protein is full of cholesterol, growth hormones, herbicide and pesticide residue, and has been implicated in causing various kinds of cancer.

nobody says you can't lose weight (and even fat weight) on Atkins, but you're most definitely gambling with you health in doing so.

a diet based on complex carbohydrates, plant based protein and lots of veggies and fruits is undoubtedly the better choice.

absolutely agreed! i substituted a lot of the animal protiens with veggi protiens (soy and tofu). but, when i do eat meat, i get it from a natural foods market and make sure it is antibacteria and hormone free.

awesome! i don't have anything against high protein per se, but most people just assume it has to be animal protein, which negates any potential health benefit.

Are you getting exercise in too? Losing the weight is only half the battle. You gotta tone it up and build up your endurance. You want to be able to party in your old age.

PREDOMINANT

avatar

I am no nutritionist, and I think it great for self-confidence and immediate gratification to loose weight in this way, but it isn't healthy.

Fad diets are just going to perpetuate the problem or introduce new problems later in your life. The term DIET refers to what you eat, not a scheme or programme designed by someone to make money.

The answer is simple, eat a healthy diet, a diet containing some food from all of the food groups, and take regular exercise (which can be a simple as walking – in some people cases) you WILL loose weight. This will not be fast, it will not be immediately life changing, but you can still enjoy food and enjoy life.

If you feel the need to lose weight faster, then reduce the sugar and fat intake from obvious sources such as full fat dairy, red meats and sugary food and drinks.

This is the PREDOMINANT diet and its free!!!

Very True. Organically grown vegetables and fruit is the way to go, and limit your meat intake. Unless a person has a thyroid problem or other there is no reason for humans to be overweight, in the end it comes down to greed for oily fatty foods & foods high in sugar which will raise cholesterol, blood pressure and body fat levels (leading to heart disease and associated internal damage).

For a healthy heart and long life, sacrifices must be made. A balanced nutritious diet and daily exercise is the orthodox way.

Eat to live not live to eat.
