cry I honestly can't think of something much worse than losing a pet. I luckily have never had to make the decision to put an animal to sleep. It's really fortunate in a way, because I know I couldn't do it. The 3 dogs that I've lost were unexpected deaths and couldn't be prevented. I personally have a really hard time with it and usually feel guilty for some reason, but ultimately I become deliriously happy thinking about the memories I've had with them. I wish I could come up with some comforting words, but it just isn't an easy thing to go through. I'm praying for you and your pup. I hope that you can find some peace with this. Much love.

I lost a dog one time. She was 15 and she never got better. My mom was in the room when they were "putting her to sleep". When my mom and dog were going to the vet I gave her a hug and kissed her and I could not bring myself to say "goodbye" bawl I was bawl after that.

My heart goes out to you rose

... and my heart is breaking. I didn't think it would be this bad.

It's a decision I've been putting off for the past days and weeks and now it's come to it I just can't handle it.

If anyone has lost a pet or has any words of comfort they can offer, I'd really appreciate it right now.

I've lost two dogs until now. One by strychnine poisoning
and the other one, well that's a long story too.

It sucks when your pet dies. They become such good friends
over time and it's hard to make do without them.

There really isn't much I can say to make you feel better.

I just wish you a lot of strength.

Raspberry

Thank you all once again. I can't imagine having to go through this again when it's time for my other dog to leave me. Everything feels very empty at home right now - I guess it's something I just have to work through.

hug to all of you who've left messages to me. It's been really important to me as right now I don't want to talk to anyone in person ... I'm really sorry to all of you who've lost pets. I knew it would be tough but until yesterday didn't realise just how bad it could get.

Love and thanks,
Kiren

Kiren, we approached this on another thread a little while ago. I truly know how you feel, my Ollie was my life. Charlie will always be in your heart, and in time you will be able to look back on your time together with smiles not accompanied by tears. Remember that he is better off now, he was probably at least in some pain and he was very old. It was your responsibility to do this, and you rose to the occasion. You made the right decision. Charlie will now be unburdened by his years, chasing squirrels on the evergreen meadows.

I will orgnote you my phone numbers, in case you need to talk to somebody.

I've had to put my dog to sleep a few years ago and it was heartbreaking, but the silver lining is that it is EXTREMELY quick so he didn't suffer. Make sure that you are in the room holding your dog while they do it so he doesn't have to spend his last moments in fear with strangers.

It will be hard for a while, but soon you will only remember the good times.

Here is a picture of me and my Dallas. Notice we had the same smile big grin

I agree - as painful and upsetting as it truly is 2 have 2 do it, I could never let one of my pets be put down without me being their - not at the moment they needed me the MOST 2 be there with them.

I will ALWAYS ensure that happens regardless of how much I blub or hurt afterwards.

They give of themselves completely 2 us during their lifetimes - so hey, its the least I can do - y'know?

Bless 'em.

Hope ur holdin up babe. pat

Ras, my condolences.

Around 1997, my wife's rabbit had bunnies. One, the runt of the bunch, was particularly endearing. He was so small that he couldn't compete with his siblings to nurse, so we'd often have to separate him with his mom to allow one-on-one time. He alone was tiny enough that often when his siblings slept, he'd squeeze through the bars of the cage to venture around our apartment. The first time he did this, we were shocked! We had no idea he could do that -- or would have the courage to! (Bunnies aren't exactly known for their bravery.) Anyway, whenever he wished and totally without prompting he'd come sit next to us on the floor as we watched TV. He sipped water out of a small saucer and slept snuggled up to us. While his siblings were a typical roudy, aloof bunch, he was so serene and affectionate that at times it seemed downright uncanny.

We were absolutely enchanted by him, but knew that he was failing to thrive. He eventually died, and it was like we'd lost a human child. We named him "Raga" for his calming nature and had a formal burial at sea (or rather Lake Erie).

This'll sound corny, but I totally think Raga served his purpose here... At the time, my wife and I were both running around like meth addicts -- constantly working, exhausting ourselves in graduate programs we hated and just generally not taking time to enjoy life. For the months Raga was alive, he made us sit still, be quiet and enjoy the smallest joys again.

A loved pet is like a family member and it's so hard to say good-bye to someone you love. I wish you strength for going through this hard times hug

Just don't let the vet keep the body, take it home and bury it or something. You don't want to know what they do with euthanized bodies.
