Photoshop is an insanely powerful program. Photoshop CS is the latest version. If you're a student, you can usually get it at a huge discount from your campus bookstore.

When you get a chance, stop in Borders and flip through "Adobe Photoshop 7.0 For Photographers", it will give you a better idea of how much this program can do.

The best-valued Photoshop is one that's pirated. Of course, nobody here would do a thing like that. nod

Anyway, Paint Shop Pro has/had a reputation of being the "poor man's Photoshop." I often use it when I don't want to slow my computer to a crawl by loading Photoshop.
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

getting sick of not being able to do things in paint...so i think i need photoshop. don't know too much about it...really need it to do simple edits and things.

Photoshop Elements 2 is only about £70 and I think it's great. (It's a watered down version of Photoshop which is great for editing)

This is what I did with it...

Paint Shop Pro and PhotoImpact are good low cost alternatives to Photoshop.

However, photoshop does offer more blending modes, more tools to select specific areas of a photograph, and better control over curves and levels.

Also, it's "adjustment layers" feature is a very convenient way to toggle effects you've applied on and off without having to hit Undo a zillion times. And working with Masks just seemed more intuitive in Photoshop than in other programs like Fireworks, that Ive worked with.
