What do you think about our possible future colonization on Mars?

www.redcolony.com

This is a probable event in our future. People are already expressing vastly different views and opinions.

The frozen red sands of Mars might appear uninhabitable to our eyes, but expert researchers in the realms of science and space know differently. With enough money and technology, we can eventually "terraform" the planet- transform Mars into a planet that can sustain plants and animals above and below surface. Lush greens can and will grow- Earthly terrain will develop. The northern polar ice cap will melt, and oceans and seas will take their original place. I just checked out a few sites and I am by no means an expert on any of this. I just thought it was interesting.

Not including the small and big problems that will arise, voice your opinions on this new and exciting future prospect!

1. What kind of government do you think we should have on Mars?

2. If this happened in your lifetime and you could afford it, would you want to visit Mars?

3. Would you want to live on Mars?

4. Do you think it's a good idea to extend human life to other planets?

5. What risks does this pose to Earth and Mars?

6. Should nations on Earth own land on Mars?

I'm leaving work now but I'll check this thread out later tonight (if it doesn't bomb like all my damn threads evil).

1. What kind of government do you think we should have on Mars? Never thought of this!

2. If this happened in your lifetime and you could afford it, would you want to visit Mars? Yep!

3. Would you want to live on Mars? Nope!

4. Do you think it's a good idea to extend human life to other planets? Yep!

5. What risks does this pose to Earth and Mars? What risk? eek

6. Should nations on Earth own land on Mars? Sure! It will eventually happen..just like Antartica

1. What kind of government do you think we should have on Mars?

It should begin as a colony of whichever country populates it (the US) and a few generations down the line declare independence (like the US!)

2. If this happened in your lifetime and you could afford it, would you want to visit Mars?

Well, it might happen in our lifetime but it is not going to be safe in our lifetime. The early centuries of space exploration will be as hazardous and fraught as our first few centuries of ocean travel. Even so - yes.

3. Would you want to live on Mars?

Fuck off! It'd have a novelty value to visit but it would get very boring. Of course, if the pay was right, I could manage a few years but I do mean a few

4. Do you think it's a good idea to extend human life to other planets?

I think it is a part of our genetic make-up. Species have colonisation built into our survival program. It's why we crossed the seas and it's why, ultimately, we'll cross the stars

5. What risks does this pose to Earth and Mars?

Well, not much to Earth and Mars has little loose. It's the travel that will be risky

6. Should nations on Earth own land on Mars?

No but you know they (guese who?) will

It's certainly an interesting idea, but terraforming Mars
would takes hundreds of years to achieve, and cost more money
than any every country in the whole world could afford.

Well, to be fair, you can't really debunk it completely until it's been closely investigated.

Scientists have to be very carefull about any publicity like this as it can affect funding. If they gave any weight to these theories, then outraged sceptics and religous fundamentalists would demand that funding was withdrawn and there's plenty of those in congress. I'm sure the guys at NASA are very curious but it's more than their reputations worth to give any credence to any of these theories until they have nothing less than 100% proof.

On the other hand, there's a place high on the moors about an hours drive from me known as Brimham Rocks where the elements have carved some amazing sculptures. This one's called The Dancing Bear:-

At this point, I think we should focus our time, energy and resources on this planet.

Space exploration is wonderful and almost everyone has benefited from the technology that spins off from the space program, but really, I'd rather see an end to pollution and world hunger, or HIV/AIDS than see a colony on Mars.

it's another fucking dumb idea. forget the fact that it's dumb ass Bush's fucked up idea. humans have no place running around the planets.
and who would want to? all you'd be doing is living in a space station where the lighting is way too bright and you get no sunshine, no seas, no plants. you can't even go to a damn drive-in. what if the oxygen machines break down? water? where is it gonna come from?
yay. go Humanity.
hell maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea if all the stoopid republicans who back this idea to live up there or maybe their stoopid children so we wouldn't have to deal with them on earth.

It's a ways off, but there's no "should" about it--it would naturally tend to be rather anarchic, hard to control--perhaps eventually organizing into something similar to the original 13 American colonies, I would think...and no doubt they eventually want Independence from America or the UN or whatever dictatorship is in charge when the time comes.

1. What kind of government do you think we should have on Mars?

well, it would probably fall under the jurisdiction of whatever government set it up. I agree with everyone that thinks it would eventually declare itself independant.

2. If this happened in your lifetime and you could afford it, would you want to visit Mars?

Hell Yeah!

3. Would you want to live on Mars?

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact, its cold as hell...

4. Do you think it's a good idea to extend human life to other planets?

Absolutely. I think its a natural part of our evolution, and will be necessary in time.

5. What risks does this pose to Earth and Mars?

I'm not sure that either is threatened by this. Colonization certainly wouldn't hurt a "dead" world like Mars, and how could it harm Earth?

6. Should nations on Earth own land on Mars?

Probably not, but I do think its inevitable. In fact, I predict eventual corporate ownership of whole sections of Mars.
