Unlike some here, I think he's always been an outstanding actor.

Some of Tom's great roles:

A Few Good Men
Born on the 4th of July
Jerry Maguire
Magnolia
Far Away (I think that's the title, his second movie with Nicole & directed by Ron Howard)
The Firm
and now, The Last Samarai

oh yeah, Rain Man

(I know I'm missing some!)

(I knew I was missing some edit)

Well, Last Samurai was quite good, but its no Return Of The King, by any stretch of the imagination. ROTK is simply the movie to rule them all (sorry, couldn't resist).

Last Samurai was a great movie, in spite of the fact that it was highly derivitive (it borrowed heavily from Dances With Wolves, Braveheart & Shogun). Still, it is a beautiful film, and definitely worth a look.

Cruise gets a bad rep, because of his past as a "pretty boy" in bad films. Nonetheless, he is a decent actor, and has done some great work in recent years. I particularly enjoyed his turn in Eyes Wide Shut.

he's not awful, but he's no actor. he's the male Julia Roberts... likeable, and pleasant to look at on-screen, but he does little more than show up on a movie set and be Tom Cruise.

Julia Roberts is a good analogy, as both CAN act when they have the right director (Cruise with Cameron Crowe, Roberts with Stephen Soderbergh). Most of the time they just play themselves, which is a shame. I think Cruise is getting a little better about this, taking on films like Magnolia.

I couldn't stand Cruise until Interview With The Vampire. I was furious that he was cast, and thought he was totally wrong for the part. He won me over with his portrayal of Lestat, and I haven't forgotten that.
