What would your reaction be if the Mars probe captured a living creature on Mars?

Would you freak out? Would you believe in aliens?

If they found a living organism, should they bring it back to earth? What about the dirt and rocks. What if there is some ancient bacteria that is harmful to humans?

I love space exploration nod Anybody else absolutely fascinated with space?

It sure would nod How could you refute the possibility of aliens? Personally the thought that we are the only life in the universe is so illogical. The earth is a speck of dust in the universe. To assume that we are the only living beings in the universe is to say that there is only 1 grain of sand on the beach... The universe is simply too huge not to contain life elsewhere.

absolutely. it would also make us redefine the concept of "life" and/or "being" and the rights for beings in general. wouldn't it be amazing if something were found during our lifetime?

And what would discovering life on other planets do to peoples notions of God? We are so consumed in the human condition that we never stop to think that there might be other life out there that aren't experiencing the same sorts of search for salvation. If on another planet, the creatures never "sinned"...

I'd be really heartened, actually! But I'd be totally against a capture and return to earth. Aside from the fact I don't think it'd be our right to go around taking interplanetary prisoners, as you said, that thing could be carrying all sorts of bugs that'd take us out.

I very much lean toward a belief in extraterrestrial life. Given how small we are in the grand scheme, there's so little reason we should be the sole bearers of life.

Yes! Fascinating stuff. It would be interesting to discover if the concept of a higher being or creator exists within the belief system of another life form. hmmm

There will be some people that can twist things, there always will be. What if God is an alien that has always taken human form so as to not shock the hell out of it's subjects? lol

I agree with you. Don't bring that thing back to earth!!! Seriously though, what if even the dirt from mars contains a lethal pathogen. Kinda scary if you think about it. Does anyone know if the probe is supposed to ever be recovered from the planet?

It was amazing seeing such clear pictures of Mars.

Remember when the asteroids slammed into Jupiter? That was an amazing moment in space.

Remember Halley's comet or Halle Bop?

I absolutely love space!!! So amazing.

Sometimes I look up into the sky and get freaked out by the vastness of it all. As if it might suddenly just collapse right on top of me. Anybody else get that feeling?

I also think that some people might view a creature from another planet as sacred..who knows...the embodiment of god perhaps? to them god is an alien.

I've loved astronomy since I was in first grade. By the end of second grade, I could navigate the entire northern sky. I could tell you the mythological Greco/Roman/Norse origins behind the constellations and even tell you the magnitude of certain stars! My teachers didn't know what to do with that, so I never really nurtured that knack. By adulthood, it had atrophied into a tucked-away interest. sad

I get a sort of scary feeling when I realize how vast the universe is, too. My first experience like that was when I was 7. I was walking home from a friend's house one winter evening and looked up to see Orion for the first time. shocked I had read all about constellations by then, but had never seen one because my mother rarely let me out of the house at night long enough to stargaze. Anyway, Orion was SO much larger than I'd imagined that it just scared the shit out of me! It was like seeing a giant in the sky waiting to pounce on me... I literally ran home! lol

Another time came in 1997, when I went on my first annual driving tour of New England. Seeing stars in the outskirts of metropolitan Cleveland is one thing; seeing them in the jet-black field of the lightless Vermont Green Mountains is something altogether different. I pulled to the side of the road and turned my lights off and OH GOD!! omfg It was like I'd suddenly become part of some sci-fi movie! I had NEVER before seen so many stars! It freaked me out, and I immediately turned my lights back on. It took me about 20 minutes or so to work up the balls to turn them off again. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!
