This was one of the coolest stories episodes of the TV show Outer limits (The new series, not the old one). It sucks because I can't remember exactly how the story went but essentially it was a story about a civilization that lived in absolute peace and harmony for 1000 years.

Then they were faced with a dilema. They had to make a choice to either accept total destruction and everybody perish at once or choose to save some of the people and infuse their peaceful existence with tragedy. They chose to all perish together. Because of that choice, there was a huge explosion.

That explosion was the north star that the three wise men used to guide them on their way to Jerusalem to see the newborn messiah...

Imagine that our choices here on earth would have consequences and impact thousands of light years away... Talk about putting shit into perspective..... nod

I absolutely love space!!! So amazing.

Sometimes I look up into the sky and get freaked out by the vastness of it all. As if it might suddenly just collapse right on top of me. Anybody else get that feeling?

I've loved astronomy since I was in first grade. By the end of second grade, I could navigate the entire northern sky. I could tell you the mythological Greco/Roman/Norse origins behind the constellations and even tell you the magnitude of certain stars! My teachers didn't know what to do with that, so I never really nurtured that knack. By adulthood, it had atrophied into a tucked-away interest. sad

I get a sort of scary feeling when I realize how vast the universe is, too. My first experience like that was when I was 7. I was walking home from a friend's house one winter evening and looked up to see Orion for the first time. shocked I had read all about constellations by then, but had never seen one because my mother rarely let me out of the house at night long enough to stargaze. Anyway, Orion was SO much larger than I'd imagined that it just scared the shit out of me! It was like seeing a giant in the sky waiting to pounce on me... I literally ran home! lol

Another time came in 1997, when I went on my first annual driving tour of New England. Seeing stars in the outskirts of metropolitan Cleveland is one thing; seeing them in the jet-black field of the lightless Vermont Green Mountains is something altogether different. I pulled to the side of the road and turned my lights off and OH GOD!! omfg It was like I'd suddenly become part of some sci-fi movie! I had NEVER before seen so many stars! It freaked me out, and I immediately turned my lights back on. It took me about 20 minutes or so to work up the balls to turn them off again. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!

Us city folk are deprived of this wonderous miracle nod I used to go camping with my family when I was younger and I would just about cry at the beauty of all the stars in the black of night sky. It's truly one of the most remarkable things a person can see nod

Special Effects houses like George Lucas' ILM or WETA could pull this shit off easily and fool everyone.

Infact that would be funny as fuck! lol

I would immediately upgrade the terror level to red. I would send the creature to Guantanamo Bay, I would inspect my shoes, then I would duct tape my windows and start Googling up remedies for anthrax.

So very 2002 of me, I know.

What a great thread! I've always loved Astronomy. I'll never forget that feeling when I finaly found the Andromeda galaxy with a pair of binoculars. It's just a tiny grey blob but you know it's actualy another galaxy containing millions and millions of stars, a ridiculously long distance away.

I think if they found a decent alien (not a microbe or a worm) there'd be uproar. Religous fundamentalists would claim it was a lie by the devil to test the faithful or the antichrist itself. Hippies would worship it and conspiracy theorists would probably claim it was a geneticaly modified man created by the Pharamaceutical industry.

What freaks me out about space is the vast nothing between galaxies. How can that ever be crossed?

By the way, who's heard of the Drake equation?

It's N = N* fp ne fl fi fc fL

Might not look too exciting at first but:-

N* represents the number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy (probably 100 billion)

fp is the fraction of stars that have planets around them (Current theories range from 1/5 to 1/2)

ne is the number of planets per star that are capable of sustaining life (Currently believed to be 1 in 5)

fl is the fraction of planets in ne where life evolves (Well, this is a controversial one which I'm not going to get involved in)

fc is the fraction of fi that communicate (for some reason, Astronomers put that at 10% to 20%, although I'm not sure how)

fL is fraction of the planet's life during which the communicating civilizations live (Good question! How long have we got?)

Anyway, you multiply all these together and that gives you N, the number of communicating civilizations in the galaxy.

Of course, as we're on an outer spiral of the Milky Way, we're in the galactic backwaters and unlikely to ever be invited to the party.

First of all, i don't think they will find anything on Mars.

On the other hand i've always lived with the perspective that there is other life out there (not little green men per se, but u know, something organic), so that wouldn't change very much. Still it would b like mmm the most historical day in our lifes? I mean, the discovery of fire would pale in comparison.

Space is fascinating indeed, but personally i'm more fascinated (although rather uneducated) in the theoretical side of things. The construct of time and such. Powerfull stuff.

Y'all know about Europa, one of Jupiter's moons right?

Well, the photos we have of Europa show it to have a pale cracked surface.

It's just conjecture at this point but the main theory is that it's surface is covered in ice.

If so, then there's vast oceans beneath.

Current theories about the beginning of life state that it began in volcanic ducts at the bottom of the ocean combined with radiation

Jupiter exerts a powerful gravitational force which literaly squeezes another of it's moons, Io, causing huge volcaninc eruptions into space, like giant pimples!

Jupiter also gives off all kinds of radiation.

If anywhere else in our solar system contains life, it is more likely to be Europa than Mars.

Check out http://seds.lpl.arizona.e...uropa.html for more info on Europa.

There is still no firmly scheduled mission to Europa, although it has been discussed now for quite some time.

Nah, I hope it happens, cos mankind will wreck this world and the people on this planet will probably need somewhere else to go. Especially if Ardeo gets to be dictator of the world wink
