Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal Are Gonna Do it!!! from www.aintitcool.com
Heath & Jake make goo-goo eyes in Ang Lee's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN! Hey folks, Harry here... Well, looks like Ang Lee's next film is as different from CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON was to THE HULK... Different genre... familiar story... Both of those films were ultimately about difficult or tough love situations. The first about warriors that never had time for love due to duty. The second was about people who could not communicate their love or give it to one another through a series of complexities and repression. Well, in BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, Ang Lee is again exploring this all too familiar and human tragedy that is Love. Focus Features, that fantastic company that has brought us LOST IN TRANSLATION, 21 GRAMS and later this year... ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, they're producing this adaptation from an Annie Proulx short story from her acclaimed collection, "Close Range : Wyoming Stories". The collection is made up of several short stories detailing a wide range of "Cowboy" stories based within the highs and lows of the culture found in Wyoming. BROKEBACK MOUNTING centers around a pair of high school dropouts, Ennis and Jack (to be played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal), that find an attraction to one another while tending sheep on the titular mountain of the story. Being aware of their environment and the the rampant homophobia of the region, they marry women, have children, but allow themselves to see each other during one "fishing trip" a year. The story is brutal and honest and beautifully written by Proulx. There isn't a helluvalot of happiness in this thing, and McMurtry isn't known for excessive sentimentality himself. And Ang tends to be pretty rough on his characters too, so this is going to be a brutal film. I like the casting, in a way it reminds me of Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman in MIDNIGHT COWBOY... The beaming handsome leading man and the more quirky leading actor. I'm yet to be blown away by anything that Heath has done so far, but Jake is amazing. As Hollywood Reporter reported that the screenplay by Larry McMurtry (yes, him) and Diana Ossana has long been regarded as one of the great screenplays that has never been produced. Nice to see it finally get it's feet under it and moving. Space for sale... | |
