An outsiders list - things I like about Canada

I've never been to Cananda and I know it's the butt of a lot of jokes in South Park and that people tend to associate it with some dodgy rock bands (Bryan Adams, Nickelback - my own personal nemesis and plenty of other dodgy AOR) but I think it's time we started an appreciation list of GOOD things about Canada.

OK, I'll start it off:-

* Tom Green
Very, very funny

* Godspeed You Black Emperor (and all the myriad spin-off bands)
One of the most innovative and defiant rock bands in history. The film "28 Days Later" would not have been half as memorable if it hadn't used 'East Hastings' by GYBE for the scenes of an abandoned London. Also a mind-blowing live act. If you still don't know who they are then it's time you found out.

* Neil Young
Deserves a knighthood. Few people can reach that age and still seem so damn cool. There's probably only him, Bowie & Prince who've managed to make credible, enjoyable records in their middle age.

* Manitoba
Like the Beach Boys meets Mercury Rev with 2 drummers and St Vitus Dance! Real mavericks, dancable, joyful and a wild live act. If you've not heard them, take your dumb ass to Soulseek/Kazaa right this fucking instant.

OK, I'm passing on the torch. It's not that I'm out of ideas, it's just that it's 12:47 and I really should go to bed.

Godspeed You Black Emperor are AWESOME!

I have 'Yanqui U*X*O*', which is really good, but I personally LOVE the 'Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada' EP which is stunning.

What about that track with the guy reciting his painful memories of being done wrong by the justice system - and the vitriolic way he stands up 4 himself..? Their music can be SO powerful on so many levels.

Artists like this are so overlooked 2day, but they will leave behind a legacy far more important than many bands who attain the heady heights of success ever will.

I adore stuff like this*. They should be cherished.

*see: Sigur Ros, Recoil, Aphex Twin, David Sylvian etc etc...ARTISTS...in the true sense of the word.

I love their low crime rate, the fact that they trust their people enough to sell allergy medication (full prescription strength) over the counter and they have the BEST snack foods in the world!
Like:
Coffee Crisp and Ketchup, Dill Pickle and All Dressed flavored potato chips! biggrin

Oh, and I love Toronto and Pointe Pelee (I just love Canada! woot! )

If you're just thinking of entertainment contributions, then I have some notables to add.

Dan Castellenetta (Homer Simpson)
Lorne Michaels
Kids in the Hall
Jim Carrey
John Candy
Eugene Levy (well, the whole SCTV crew)
Michael J Fox
Mike Myers
The Arrogant Worms!

Trooper
The Guess Who
BTO
Burton Cummings
Hawksley Workman
The Stampeders (Sweet City Woman, Hit the Road Jack)

And... Canadian contributions we should all hate

Alan Thicke
Shania Twain
Celine Dion
Anne Murray
Alanis Morisette

And, I'd lastly like to add, I don't really consider South Park's Canada jokes to be insulting, and they slam most countries a lot worse than Canada. Who saw Christmas in Canada?? HAHAHAHAHAH! Classic.

I'm a canuck

Canada Rocks

Go Canada

Go Calgary Flames!! Woohoo! We might actually make playoffs this season! About freaking time!
