I SO cant wait 4 this movie...this is gonna be the one 4 me this year. The trailer kicks MAJOR ass.

Ive really enjoyed Del Toro's stuff so far (particularly liked 'The Devil's Backbone')
& Ron Perlman is an inspired casting choice - he IS 'Hellboy'. Cool, cool, cool.
I hope that it grabs the public's attention, but I'd imagine it will become a cult film due 2 the kinda 'underground' nature of the comic etc, but man, it deserves big things - 4 once, an adaptation of a superhero thats faithful 2 its source material!
So...BRING IT ON ALREADY! I cant wait...

The Low-Down:
Don't know who HELLBOY is and why he's getting his own movie? Do yourself a favour and read this damn fine title so you too can sound like one of those "oh, the book was sooo much better" muttering types in the cinema when the movie comes out 2004!

As for the rest of us Hellboy-literate types, it's good to see Del Toro go for strong character actors rather than cash cow egos...

Firstly, everyone should know already that the wonderful character actor RON PERLMAN has been cast as HELLBOY. For those who may not recognize the name, you'd sure as hell remember the face as he is one ugly bastard. Perhaps his most well known role is as playing "The Beast" in that horrible late 80's show BEAUTY AND THE BEAST with Linda Hamilton where he played this lion-esque monster who protected Linda from nasty muggers and even worse weekly plot-lines. You'd also know him as the lovable giant in Jeaunet + Caro's THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN, the token hard-arse in ALIEN RESURRECTION and the token hard-arse in BLADE II.



Ron will wear a full body prothetic which has never really been attempted before in film simply because people can see the seams. Director Guillermo Del Toro and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola are apprently very happy with the full body prosthetic, Del Toro adding that the make-up captures the distinctive Mignola hard-edge features of the character. His right arm will also be prosthetic (obviously) and his tail will be fully CGI-ed in in post-production.



LIZ SHERMAN will be played by SELMA BLAIR - best known for her nerdy role (and sad fanboy wet dream french kiss with Sarah Michelle) in CRUEL INTENTIONS. She was also the narcy-bitch-turns-good in LEGALLY BLONDE and apparently last Christmas was on the streets of L.A begging for food until Reese Witherspoon opened her door to her.

PROFESSOR BROOM will be played by John Hurt best known as the very first Alien victim of the same name movie franchise, along with his excellent performance as John Merrick in THE ELEPHANT MAN and countless other roles.

For that mad monk, GRIGORI RASPUTIN, KAREL RODEN will handle acting chores. You might have seen him in 15 MINUTES as the head bad guy. He also played Carter in BLADE II and is in the upcming BULLETPROOF MONK with Chow Yun Fat. He will be having a good deal of prosthetics in the creation of the ancient mesmerist and will have a classic Rasputin look.




The small part of DR. MANNING is going to LARRY MILLER, from all those Christopher Guest films.

Contrary to previous reports, ABE SAPIEN will NOT be completely 100% CG but will be played by DOUG JONES. Jones has a very eclectic history as a performer. A professionally trained mime, he’s played a Yeti in MONKEYBONE, a Morlock in THE TIME MACHINE, a Dead Iraqi Soldier in THREE KINGS, a Cockroach in MIMIC, the Thin Clown in BATMAN RETURNS, a Ripper in TANK GIRL and something called a Mother Bug in BUG BUSTER. He’s one of those rail thin types. Abe will be about 80% Live Action, with the remaining 20% being CG for Sub-Aquatic movements that a human couldn’t do. For the live action, he’ll be a Puppet, Radio Controlled prosthetics upon the actor and a suit. The design for him was the brain squeeze of Jose Fernandez, Wayne Barlowe and Steve Wang.



Little is known about KRONEN other than that he will be played by 3 different actors to capture to full range of motion and actions that this undead Nazi bastard with sandy blood has.



The movie will be based primarily on the first mini-series SEED OF DESTRUCTION and it is aimed to being a PG rating with an emphasis on H.P Lovecraft-esque monsters rather than hordes of the undead, ghosts, spirits, gods, whatever else has appeared in Hellboy.

I cant WAIT for this! BladeII proved to me that Del Toro can do the comic book movie thing, so I'm hopeful. I actually have never read Hellboy (believe it or not kiddies, there is actually a comic book your friendly, neighborhood lightsaber wielder hasn't read!), but the visual look great on this, and since the creator has had such input into the film, that bodes well. I do plan on picking up Seed Of Destruction before the film comes out, just so I can have the point of reference to the original medium.
