We're pregnant? Do you think it’s okay for men to use this term when it’s the woman who is expecting? My supervisor brought this up today. She mentioned how much it ticks her off. Something about it being a dominating male thing. She mentioned how men champion anti-abortion issues and now this all-inclusive “we” gives them that much more control when it comes to women’s reproductive rights—or something to that effect.
She said that it’s women not men who have to deal with the physical aspects of pregnancy, e.g. the morning sickness, labor pains, etc. and thinks the “we” terminology is a bit much. Why not just simply say, “My wife is having a baby?” I really didn’t notice this new “we” thing (my supervisor said it’s common among upwardly mobile types) but it does make me think. (I even searched the net for thoughts and came across a brief article about a gay male couple seeking to adopt a child. They also used the term “We’re pregnant!”) Got thoughts?

It's no problem to think like that, as long as she does it on her own.
My opinion is that it took 2 to make it, men are involved all the way through and are required to support in every way plus "we" will be bringing the child up. So when my wife gets pregnant it will be "we"

I've always thought that it was men trying to show support for their wives, a way of letting them know they're not in it alone. I personally wouldn't say it, 'cuz it just sounds weird, but I've never particularly viewed it as a way for men to dominate their women. I think most men with that kind of attitude would shy away from any such term that implies that they are in a "feminine" situation (most would be too macho for that). In fact, almost everytime I've ever heard this used, its been a woman who's said it.
Personally, I would use the term "we're expecting" since BOTH parties should be equally looking forward to that. Just my opinion. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
