Dawn of the Dead

There have been two events in entertainment that have had a major impact in my life. One was the first time I heard Controversy on the radio while my dad was driving me to school back in '81 or '82, and the other was seeing Dawn of the Dead in the theater back in '78.

My first listen to the song Controversy just grabbed my attention, it was like clicking on a light switch in my head. I also remember being embarassed listening to it, because my pre-teenage mind mistook Prince singing "Controversy" for "Got your pussy". No joke!

Dawn of the Dead seriously scrambled my brains. I was 8 and somehow convinced my dad to take me to see it in the theater. I'd never seen such a wild and gory movie, and I remember my dad turning to me at one point and asking "You going to be ok?". I said yeah and watched the rest of the movie stunned. I went to school the next monday and told everyone about Dawn, and it became almost like an urban legend with us. I had to wait quite a few years until Dawn of the Dead was released on video to see it again, and I now collect Dawn of the Dead merchandice just about as much as I do Prince merchandise.

The soundtrack music for by Goblin rocks hard, the social humor is very unusual for a horror movie, and the friendship between the characters of Peter and Roger is enjoyable to watch. Anyone else here have love for Dawn of the Dead? (or am I the only sick puppy?)

P.S. Ken Foree is cool.

I really love it.

Sadly, I bought the Anchor Bay trilogy of the dead box set. Don't do it!

"Night Of The Living Dead" is some anniversary edition with new footage badly inserted by some some people whose parents were assistants on the original or something tenous.

"Dawn Of The Dead" not the full uncut version which later popped up.

"Day Of The Dead" no complaints.

Your Dad is cool, I wish I coulda seen it at the theatre. They do have zombie movie allnighters every year at an old fashioned gaslit cinema near me but they haven't shown that one. I did see "Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue" there though!

Yes, I have the trilogy box set too, and although it's great to have all three films in one nice looking set, the versions suck!

I'm dying to see what Anchor Bay does with their two releases of Dawn later this year. They've been seriously teasing for a couple years now.

The Monroeville Mall, in PA where they filmed that is only like an hour or so away from me. I've been meaning to visit that place, I hear they have a plaque on the wall mentioning that it was filmed there.

Great movie!

If I remember it right, Goblin did the music for Suspiria too?

Yeah and it's starting to piss me the fuck off! I was looking forward to February just for the 3 disc set and now I have to wait longer!!! Dawn is my favorite zombie movie of all time. I can't believe someone has the nerve to try to remake it. disbelief Some things are better left untouched.

This is among my favorite horror flicks too. I recall a certain degree of silly "urban legend" surroundng the film too -- like the fact the Bible really says this will happen during the end times (which it doesn't), and that the mall used for filming was actually Randall Park Mall, which at the time was the largest mall in the Cleveland area. (As Tom mentioned, it's actually somewhere in Pennsylvania)

Oh yes, Goblin did the music for Suspiria too. It was a strange time for me around 14, as I would alternate between listening to the 1999 album and the soundtrack for Dawn of the Dead (which I'd taped by holding my cassette recorder up to the tv speaker!). I love the music for Suspiria too, but the Dawn soundtrack is one of the best movie scores.

I met Ken Foree (who plays Peter in Dawn) a couple years ago at a horror convention, and he's a very friendly and approachable guy. I was amazed when I took a pic with him how tall he is! He's got to be 6 five or something!

As for the Dawn remake, yes, it's a shame that they're doing it, especially when Romero is having trouble getting money together for his 4th zombie film. And although I like Ving Rhames as an actor, he's no Ken Foree.

I've got Goblin's "Supsiria" soundtrack on big gatefold vinyl with a film poster. Very nice!

Their soundtrack to Deep Red/Profondo Rossi (pardon my Italian) is also cracking but I haven't bought that yet or Dawn Of The Dead soundtrack.

Whatever happened to Goblin? I imagined them as all having beards.

I remember the time and place I saw Night Of The Living Dead for the first time--my brothers were laughing all through it as I was terrified

I remmeber Dawn too--the ads had Ceasar Romero and his voice advertising it...you know, that voice made of razor blades...he was in Soldiers Story etc...

To answer your question daned about whatever happened to Goblin, they reunited for one of the last Dario Argento flicks called "Sleepless" here in the states. Unfortunately the movie and soundtrack were disappointing.

One of the leaders of Goblin named Claudio Simonetti has kept recording horror soundtracks and even has a new group called Daemonia. They do a new version of Suspiria that's featured on the Anchor Bay special edition of Suspiria, and they tour playing classic Goblin cuts. There are cd's available, and if you search for Daemonia on google, you'll find them.

Oh yes, Night messed up my mind too, in fact it was like a double whammy. I saw Night of the Living Dead on TV late one night shortly before Dawn hit theaters. They showed Night uncut, and I still remember my reaction to seeing the ghouls eating the guts of the two burnt up teenagers.

Hey, I never knew that was Caesar Romero doing the voiceover for the Dawn commercials! He's got a much cooler voice than I remember!
