My General Television Theory I've thought about this a very long time, did in-depth research and many experiments on myself and my boyfriend. My theory has been tested in a limited way, but now I need to put it up from scrutiny.
As Orgers, you are uniquely qualified to assess multilevel meanings, cryptic comments and pop culture in general. I'd be honored if you'd consider assessing my work. Thank you in advance! My general theory of television is that US-style, network PROGRAMMING is designed to make the viewer feel SUPERIOR, while the ADVERTISING is designed and presented as an OPPORTUNITY to improve on that SUPERIORITY. Let's say you are watching Paris Hilton. She's rich but you'll feel good because Paris obviously does not have a tenth of your "common sense". You may not have her money, but at least you're not that dumb. Cue to commercial. It's these disposable dusting sheets. You house isn't the cleanest on the block, but it's decent and you could bring a toucn of modernity to your housekeeping by investing in a box of these babies. You're given an opportunity to anchor that great common sense of yours and continue on your journey of self-improvement through consumerism. Back to Hilton and Richie, you are too digusted to continue watching the show, so you play a videogame until FRASIER comes on. Frasier is one of the longest running ego-booster of American television. Here's a guy who is intelligent, learned and sophisticated, yet YOU the viewer have felt superior to him since he first entered Sam's bar in cheers, because despite all his education and intellect, Frasier is too dumb to refrain from pomposity and delusions of grandeur, which YOU would have the smarts to avoid even though you're sitting there in your sweat pants and your faded, hole-riddled t-shirt. Then the advertising comes.. KFC, Pizza Hut and GM. It's not what Frasier would get, and that's the whole point. You are not to be mistaken for those foolish old yuppies with all their pretense. You kept your common sense all these years with solid products and values, and while you may not be a walking encyclopedia, you know real, useful things that will help you far more than knowing how many operas Verdi wrote. And KFC, Pizza Hut and GM are there to help you improve your solid standards. Year after year, they improve something or keep the quality up despite all the pressure, just like you do. A little simplistic? Sure... but how can you explain Springer without this theory being true? It works for damn near everything on the dial.

I believe you're half right.
But that also means you're half wrong.

Parties are a good training ground for phoniness.
