And who the heck rated me only one star!?!? This is GOOD stuff here -- pyrotechnics, panic and evacuations, esoteric science, close escape from death. Everything but sex!

Explosion rocks Arkansas chemical plant
Tuesday, January 6, 2004 Posted: 1:18 PM EST (1818 GMT)

CONWAY, Arkansas (AP) -- An explosion rocked a chemical plant Tuesday, sending up a giant plume of smoke that could be seen for miles and forcing authorities to evacuate the area.

"There were some early reports of people with burns but I am not sure of their status," said police Lt. Chip Stokes.

The evacuated area included parts of an industrial park and a daycare center.

Black smoke rising from the site could be seen as far away as Little Rock, about 30 miles from the plant.

The explosion occurred at Detco Industries, an industrial chemical manufacturer.

How ugly.

The Cleveland blaze burned itself out after a few days and crews are now going though checking for hot spots and seeing exactly how it started. No one, thank God, was hurt. I hope they have as much luck in Arkansas.
